Question about Hannukah gifts
First, I'm assuming gifts are given during Hannukah (I seem to remember one gift for each day but I've no clue if thats right. - I'm also assuming I'm spelling Hannukah right
)
My bf's parents are Orthodox Jewish and I'd like to give them something. I'm wondering if there are any rules on what they can receive/when. I'd just ask my bf but he wouldn't tell me anyway - he'd just say they'd appreciate anything and wouldn't mind if violated some rule.
If they haven't bought it yet, I was thinking of getting them a decorated glass dish that they pointed out in a Jewish store. His mom said it would be lovely to have for your apples and honey - I'm guessing she meant it would be great for the Jewish New Year. Everything else they mentioned liking is out of price range by at least three or four times. Is there any reason why I shouldn't give them something like during Hannukah? Or any rules about which day during Hannukah it should be given?
I'm not Jewish, so discount anything I say with a large scoop of salt. I'm guessing that personal response of the receiver is going to be more of a factor than any general guidelines. And since I don't know these people, let me be general. The dish sounds nice. For someone that is orthodox, maybe a book? A commentary on the scriptures? No clue which commentary. Or a book on archaeology? Or maybe they have all the books they want to read, or would want to pick them themselves? No idea - you need to get Mr. BF to be more helpful.
If your totally unsure, just give the default Christmas gifts. For dad, that is a neck tie. For kids, socks. For mom, something you made yourself.
Lol. Well they did really love the crayon drawing thank you card we made them
The big problems with gifts is they are about two economic classes above me so just about anything I could get they probably already have one ten times better. That's why I think the dish would be a good idea- i know they like it, and it only costs $25. I suppose I could get dad a tie, but I might want to check to make sure he wears them first. He seems to be more of a sweater vest type of guy. of course I could just get him a paperweight - and that could be even cheaper because I could jsut paint a rock for him.
