What an odd question, but then I have an odd reply :)

I fantasized intensely about being able to be a girl rather than a boy when I was quite young --- probably between 9 and 12, so corresponding with the uncomfortable and confusing onset of puberty. I remember trying to get to sleep at night, wishing desperately that I'd wake up female, because I'd come to the conclusion that interrelationships were just "easier" for girls (a notion I've long since had corrected by my female friends - it's just as hard, but very different from the male experience).

As an adult, however, I do occasionally think of myself as a "lesbian trapped in a man's body" --- Don't get me wrong, I like my equipment, and it gets lots of personal attention, but I'm prone to being flamboyant and effete when I'm in a manic phase (and am often mistaken for being gay, though perhaps that's just an NT reaction to my AS oddness and my propensity for singing showtunes at work), and I wonder in those moments if I'd have been more comfortable in my skin as a woman.

But it's ultimately just a vague notion, and nothing that I ever obsess over.

Heh - never told that to anyone before.

Nick

That was interesting and a nice read... thanks!
Sorry you get those reactions from other people for what seems like pretty joyous times.

Reading posts on this forum for over a year now, I've been surprised to read how some of the ladies don't particularly like having breasts. "They get in the way, guys always look, difficulty wearing thin fabric tops, hating bras, etc."

Hear, hear. Shapeshifting is my super power of choice.

I've actually thought about this before. If I were to just wake up one morning as a girl, I think that'd just be okay. If there was some magic, wand-waving way to become a girl, I'd have to think about it. Otherwise I think I'll just stay the way I was born.

Oddly enough this is a theme in one of the OZ stories by Baum. A young man who goes to Oz is tranformed into a female ! !! That gave me pause as a lad ! !!
Ya wake up, and 'Oh, wot's this??' I don't know how that's interpreted by therapists, but BLIMEY ! ! I remember thinking, trade my manhood for being girly?

Of course we all think the other sex has it easy. A girl says she wishes she was male so she could get good and pissed, and all her mates say ''at's all right, let's walk you home now." But the reality is, ya get pissed, and some blokes likely to take a swing at ya, and yer lookin' up at the sky from the pavement. Whereas, some girly gets a little tipsy, and it's 'who brought her?'.

It also seems like a not too uncommon event in MANGA.
I don't read any, but my daughter and her best friend have related stories to me where the characters change... mostly into animal-type forms it seems.
I understand there are some series with characters who I would call Transgendered.

First off, some of the posts in this topic make me ashamed of my physical gender.
I've come to deeply hate all the emphasis on the "differences" between men and women.
I'm not quite going to say that I would prefer to be female, but I do think I would be better off as female when I consider the structure of my family.
In truth, I'd most prefer to not have any physical gender.

I believe that in our Western cultures, if we weren't so hung up on a narrowly defined idea of masculinity we would be so much better off.

Both men and women, in general (or in public anyway), take such a staunch stance at what constitutes being masculine.
Men do not have the leeway to express emotions or interests in the same way women do.

If a woman expresses herself in a masculine manner, she is still respected... even honored... in many circumstances.
Not all the time, everywhere, but certainly most places I have lived and worked.

Where I live, it's all the rage for girls and women to be the hard talking, tough walkin', 'Cowgirl'.

BUT,

If a 'Cowboy' wanted to ease up a bit and take on a bit of a feminine flair... even for just certain occasions... he would be labeled a fa***t and whatnot, and exposed to hatred even to the point of physical abuse.

I can guarantee you that although I have been actively and somewhat openly exploring a feminine gender these last several years, I have also launched myself into someone's face numerous times when they were doing something I felt needed to be stopped.
So, while I may be finding more feminine feelings in myself, I still maintain the ability to act like an animal when provoked. I have the size and muscle to back it up too.

Once I get all this straightened out in my mind, I will be the happiest I have ever been in my life.
Until then, I'll play a game of cat-and-mouse while working out various feelings and ideas from my mind.

Hmmm,

After reading my post above I thought I should add something.

I believe that too many people in this world do not understand the difference between gender and sexuality.
I think I mentioned that in a previous post.

In the context of gender, we have an equal amount of ignorance in what defines the different genders and how fluid these genders may be. Not to mention that we typically only recognize two genders.
Couldn't there be more?

I believe most of the defining of what makes a certain gender what it is, can be traces back to fear.
People fear a life without limits.
We put limits on everything we can, so we can state.. FOR SURE... what it is we believe, what it is we like, where it is we belong.
It's so ingrained in our idea of identity, that when these definitions/limits are challenged... we more-often-than-not respond with anger and fear.

How many people responding here, and in the corresponding women's thread, would be much more at ease if the limits were more vague?

I don't know. The eighties were big on androgeny, and I don't remember being more at ease.
As a matter of fact, I think it made me more nervous when I'd try to flirt in a dark pub....

Well you've got me there... never been in a dark pub

As far as the 80's... you know more about that androgyny stuff than I.
I was well entrenched in the deserts of West Texas drilling for oil (rig hand), and similar red-neck stuff.
If anyone showed up around us then who didn't fit into the standard guy/girl mode... well, let's just say it wouldn't have been a very pretty sight. Imagine all this time, me, hiding all those gender-questioning thoughts and actions from the 'good 'ole boys'!

I was a pretty nervous fella for a while! 8O :P

No I would not want to be female.

I would not be able to travel as freely as I do nor enjoy the relative safety I often take for granted. Men own and operate most everything, women are used to a level of subjegation even in western countries I can't even comprehend.

Plus having been a man for 35 years I would probably decide to be a celebate woman.

I would not want to deal with interwomen relationships because they are SO complex and seemingly illogical that I'd go nuts.

Plus look at the way society pressures women. Sometimes I think they are more vulnerable to commercialism than a little child.

TM, back before she met me, used to backpack in very remote areas by herself. Some of the stories she's told me make my hair stand up ! ! She was quite brave, sometimes in a rather naive sort of way.
I really don't think women have a problem traveling about. If they're worried, there's a lot of self-defense courses they can take.
In the USA, they can always carry a sidearm.
