Sorry to barge in on your "lets shower alex in cheques and $100 notes but i have two things i'd like to point out

Firstly, now please be truthful, who created this?

Secondly:

Pikachu, I doubt donations of that order would buy much.

That was the general idea, Google ads do rake in quite a bit of money on big sites like this

Alex, an email account would be nice, but I need no incentive to make a donation. WP has helped me immensely, more than any therapy I've had in my life. In the short time I have been on the site I have had more social interaction than in the whole rest of my life. I have paid hundreds of dollars, perhaps even thousands, in copays for therapy that did not accomplish this.
I have sent you a donation. It is far too little to match the benefit I have received. I will try to send more later, when my work issues have been resolved.
What would help me is a reminder - I saw the announcement about making donations, and promptly forgot about it.
Perhaps a note on the homepage every once in a while?

With very much sincere thanks
Jack

Alex,
how did the donations go? Are you still in need of money? I notice this thread is a little old, and I'm just wondering if you got enough.

Alex, I've come up with an idea that will allow me to give you money. I still, and will always, disagree with the donation thing so instead of donating (i'm not exactly rich), I'll click on the ads, but you have to return the favour by clicking the ads on my website, does that make sense to you?

If you don't want to click the ads on my site in exchange for me clicking the ads on WP then that is fine, but it will work to both our advantages

click fraud is no good.

An update about all this would be great. I don't agree with the silver gold and copper thing, I used to belong to a different site that did that and it was a one up man ship. I hated it.
But I do believe in a donation system for those who can afford it, without the recognition that they have done so, isn't the knowing that you help keep such a great site open enough.

I have learnt so much about my families Aspergers that life has become a lot easier.
And I hate seeing the adverts.

Also a reminder on the home page for donations is a great idea. :D

Yes.

On another note, I'd like to make a personal appeal for donations at this point in time. We are making a huge purchase (more than 1000) dollars. I can't say what it is at this time, but be assured that it is extremely important to prevent the site from getting a bad image.

Are you going to publish costs of running the site? Therefore people will know how much needs to be donated to help cover it.

Start a PayPal sebscription for $5 every 3 months for a private forum locked by a secure password. IT could help with basic funding while letting the poor folk help out as well as stay away from forum pricks.

People that try to cause problems instead of converse, free speech is free speech though. Well I got the idea from another business model, they offered paid forums which were secure and each member paid a certain amount every month to be there.

However other services were provided, more overhead expendensures. Forums do not cost as much as streaming media so it is just the forum.

Maybe people would be interested in a smaller WP group at a cost every 3rd month. Though it could be a waste of your time as others who pay but end up with no one to talk to if it’s just a few.

When people pay for a service they are less likely to act up, disrupt or be impatient as they know others are paying as well. Its comes with a certain mentality that is shared however there are those that even in a premium forums with exclusivity will do such things to be an arse.

Does WTF mean what the flarp? While in business I did not curse in front of my customers but I understand the saying is one of those things where it makes someone feel cool to curse. I cursed the other day in a recording to a prick online here. I found myself relieved but morally confounded by my influence on younger minds.

Moderators in FREE site help too.
I will ask again, how can I pay without having a credit card?
