Have you tried meditation? It's mostly just practicing being aware, practicing observing. With practice that skill becomes better. I've been able to stop meltdowns when I was meditating regularly. I once stopped it before it started, and felt great after.

I've got a few books on mindfulness from when I took a DBT class with my ex, but I never put the effort into it to gain much. That's a good idea though and I might get those books out and start looking into it again.

I'm in one of those "change your life for the better" modes at the moment and I think meditation might help.
