Palilalia is the repeating of one’s own words. Apparently it sometimes occurs in young aspie children developing language. When I was six or seven I went through a phase where I would say a sentence and then repeat that sentence under my breath. This was one of the many things in my life for which I had no explanation till I read about AS.

Has anyone else ever had palilalic speech?

Yes, when I was younger I did this a lot. As an adult I actually say everything under my breath before I say it with my mouth. Unless I am stressed then I reverse it and say it under my breath after out loud.

I try to say it to myself first to see if it is totally innapropriate since I am going to say it two times anyway I might as well benifit from it :)

It is interesting to note that Albert Einstein did this. When he was a child, he would repeat his sentences under his breath.

I don't remember doing this, but that does not mean that I didn't do this. I currently have a habit of repeating questions asked of me before giving an answer. I don't realize that I'm doing this, but people have pointed it out to me.

Yes, I have palilalia. It is one of my Tourette's symptoms. I echo myself quite frequently.

It isn't the same thing.

Palilalia is like saying something something while you are talking. The volume usually does not change between words and echoes.

Echolalia is when you repeat other people, I do that sometimes as well, but not as often as palilalia. However, echolalia isn't like repeating questions, it is words. Like if someone says "let's go," I might immediately say "let's go." If someone says "sit down," I might immediately say "sit down." Lots of people repeat questions.

My companion has played little games with me when I was echoing her and she would keep saying one word and I would just echo it every time she said it. I am aware that I am echoing, but can't really stop it from happening, like a sneeze, it just has to be done. That's Tourette's.

I know that it isn't the same thing. The important part was the first part (i.e. "I don't remember doing this, but that does not mean that I didn't do this.") I was using my current habits as an example that I often do things of this nature and do not realise that I am doing them.

I used to do this, but it's something I've grown out of thankfully.

Yes. It's a common symtom ot Tourette's. I still do it, but I have gotten good at hiding it from people.

My (undx'd aspie) son does that. I do it too, but not as much as he does.

I can relate to this rephrasing of words
under my breath. This is a natural(autistic?)
technique that I was scolded for at Quizno's
and other places.

Upon this shutting it down, I would often not
learn at the job, and the job was doomed.
Don't look at it as a bad thing, but instead
a good thing.

Sincerely,
Ghosthunter

It seems that I've done it on occasions myself throughout my life, people often put it off as either wierd or just making sure what I said sounded right. I still do it at times.

I'm not sure if I did this when I was younger, as my memories of these things tend to be blurry unless I'm remembering a specific event apart from my childhood as a whole, though from at least kindergarten though fifth grade I'd say things under my breath first, and then say it.

Along with this, when I was in fourth grade and I didn't have a pencil when we were supposed to start writing, I would sit there for an hour, staring out, just trying to figure out the precise way to request a pencil from my teacher, working out word choice, tone of voice, etc. When she noticed I wasn't writing, I would say my line and get a pencil. Ten minutes later, I'd have something written down that she liked.

I didn't remember that constant habit until I was talking with her about a year ago or so and she mentioned it, but ever since then specific assignments in which this occurred keep popping into my head with extraordinary detail. Funny how memory works sometimes.

Though I do not realize it, I have been told by different people I repeat myself. Sometimes, when my swim coach is giving us a set in swim practice, I repeat it back, one thing at a time. It probably annoys everyone else, but they haven't commented on it yet.

What I think is interesting is that the Navy requires people to repeat their orders (out loud). Also I have been in a ton of communication classes that state repeating the person or refrasing what they say is a good communication technique. So maybe Aspie's are just ahead of the game :)
