Quote:
A British woman who had an abortion 10 years ago and was later sterilized did so because she believes pregnancy is bad for the environment, the London Daily Mail reported Sunday.

Toni Vernelli, 35, hopes her actions would ensure her carbon footprint would be kept to a minimum, the Mail reported. The environmental advocate also sees having children as an egotistical act.

"Having children is selfish. It's all about maintaining your genetic line at the expense of the planet," Vernelli told the Mail, adding she believes bringing new life into the world only adds to the problem.

Another woman, 31-year-old Sara Irving, also underwent sterilization because she felt "a baby would pollute the planet."

Irving became an environmentalist as a teenager when she realized saving the environment was her top and foremost priority in life, the Mail reported. After going through several boyfriends she finally found her now husband Mark Hudson who shares in her ‘no kid’s policy.’

Alright, so we all stop having kids, then what? The world is saved, and the human race is gone. Brilliant, simply brilliant. having kids isn't selfish, people do it for a number of reasons. I had my daughter because I thought I'd make a good parent and I have a lot that I want to pass on to the next generation. I only wanted to have one ((alright maybe two)) kids, and a screwup in my c-section made sure of that. :( I had planned on adopting too, so at least I know little Rose will have a sibling, even if they aren't 'blood related'.

I don't find having kids to be selfish, but I do find having kid, after kid, after kid to be. The world is getting overpopulated as is, so why are they having twelve children!! If they can't control them, can barely feed and cloth them, and make a living going on TV telling how hard it is to make it work, then why? Have a couple, and leave it at that.

Lastly, if they are soo concerned about this, why don't they say no to sex, or use protection? What's so hard about using a condom and birth control?

I don't have a problem with taking care of the planet, but everyone's acting like this is our life purpose...

The sad thing is, that a one-child per couple policy worldwide is probably the only reasonable chance the world has of avoiding mass extinction. It seems like the numbers for how bad Global Warming is get worse almost by the month. A population of around 2 billion, achievable within a century if people reduce the number of children they have to one per couple, is really the only chance we have. Almost any environmental responsibility you have is wiped out by having children. It's one of those unfortunate truths that no one wants to address because, fundamentally, most people don't think that it's a reasonable request, to limit the size of your family. I would, on the other hand, submit that when we're talking about mass starvation and extinction, any action which would prevent that is a reasonable one.

I don't think that abortion is necessarily the right solution, but sterilisation, sure.

Well, birth control isn't perfect - she might well have been using it before she got pregnant. I'd think of sterilisation as a pretty major way of making sure the same thing wouldn't happen again, so clearly she didn't believe that abortion after abortion was the best way to hold to her principles - she made sure to avoid that.

Now those are stupid woman, in my oppinion. A tiny baby pollute the enviroment. Hah! Not like trash, smoke, plastic, toxic waist, gasoline, ect., ect. came to their minds. Plus the billions of people that already egsist. One less baby is not a change. If she doesn't want to have kids, then she shouldn't have had sex. Apparently that concept was hard for her to grasp. Perhaps Vernalli would like to be killed herself? Laying on the floor bleeding and dying with her hand reaching up asking "why did you do that to me". According to her, murder isn't wrong at all. After all, her death is 'saving the planet'.

That's why I said conbine different methods. Yes a condom is falable, as is birth control, and date timing, but using them together and chances are you wont end up pregnant. This takes work and comitment though and people today don't like that.

If she really cared so very much, then why didn't she get her tubes tied from the start? This is all just a publicity stunt for her 'cause' to be heard.

What if someone has, say, octuplets?

I do believe that's impossible ((barring maybe a record setter)). Women who have six babies don't make it to term, at least the two I know of didn't. There babies were premies who barely made it. They were also tall women with a strong build capable of such a task, and it still almost killed them.

I wonder if she'll retroactively enforce her stance on pregnancy to her own mother's.

Wouldn't killing herself stop her carbon footprint immediately? Of course, though, her body will give off carbon dioxide as she decomposes. But that is going to happen anyways.

Maybe if someone can come up with a way to recycle the human body into bio-fuels...

The thing is, from a dispassionate and technical stand point, she is right. People give off a lot of greenhouse gases just by breathing and farting.

Of course, to abort one's child for (it seems) no other reason than to prevent greenhouse gas emissions show that THEY are the waste of oxygen.

Personally, I do not want children, but for a selfish/selfless reason: I would be annoyed and driven mad by the child, and possibly do something I would regret.

If she really cared about her carbon footprint, she would plant some trees. Actually do something useful instead of pestering a government that won't change like that.
