"ignore"? I think it was causing technical problems with the site.

While the ignore button made it easier to do so if you are determined to ignore someone it is easily done. Just skip over his/her post.

eight years of usenet and i can't avoid a good fight, I end up in multi day endlessly tedious arguments.

I liked the ignore feature, it kept me out of arguments I didn't want to be in.

it was, indeed, causing problems with the site. no-one wanted to see it go, but it had to, i'm afraid.
