Actually it's "I lie down on the mat." Remember: People lie down, chickens lay eggs.

She don't, do she?
(As an aside, I overheard this one the other day and I believe it actually is correct "African American Vernacular English.")

"With it's muscle tensed and about to lunge." A possessive it does not have an apostrophe. "Its" is a possessive, "It's" is "it is".

When the convict was hanged, I got sick and lay down. (is that right?)

I would of been shoveling all afternoon, but I borrowed the shovel to my fiend.
