I've read that people with ASDs tend not to share the common phobias that have been passed down through the species since the Stone Age- fears of things like heights, deep water, small spaces, snakes, etc. Certainly I'm afraid of none of these things myself. So, do you have any of these phobias?

i think i'm a little bit agrophobic- i feel really dizzy in wide open spaces. when this happens i have to find something tall like a tree or a wall or a lamp post (last resort) to stand near to alleviate the anxiety.

i never used to understand why some people are afraid of rats until i read nineteen eighty-four... vile!

I'm not afraid of heights as long as I don't think I'm going to fall. Our school did these trips to Toronto every so often, and we went to the CN Tower. A lot of people were afraid of the glass floor, but not me. I wan hopping around on the glass floor just to freak people out. :D

I get vertigo if I visually have nothing to lock on to. If I'm standing and looking up at the sky, I feel as if I'm going to fall over.

In the pool I get disoriented on the deep end when my feet are not on the bottom.

I can't stand on one leg either, inner ears don't work quite right :P

I'm afraid of heights when I am unsupported. I'm nervous about getting on an open walled "down" escalator (like the ones in malls where there are not walls on the sides. I could never go on a high ladder or walk on a roof. I'm a little nervous standing on a chair. This has been the case since childhood.

But, I'm not afraid of tall buildings, flying in airplanes, even roller coasters (although at 56, I don't do the big monster ones). As long as I can tell myself that it is impossilbe to fall, I am fine.

So, the glass floor wouldn't scare me. I also would find it fun.

I once read that people who are afraid of heights are really afraid of what they might do at the height. That's definitely the case with me.

I have a fear of heights but not deep water. Maybe, as others have mentioned, it's because I'm afraid of what I'd do at such heights. Whereas, being a fairly good swimmer, it's quite impossible to drown myself in deep water.

I'm arachniphobic. I'm not too crazy about insects either.

I don't have a fear of heights but I have this weird staircase issue where walking up or down them can make me get vertigo, I thin because it's so repetitive, and I can't go downstairs fast, nor upstairs fast at some times though other times I can jog up them without a problem.

Yes, I do.

I don't like water where I can't see the bottom. I imaine myself drowning.
I don't like heights, either, I imagine myself falling. I get kinda dizzy at heights where there is a chance of falling off.

But

Extreme heights wouldn't be as bad, I mean, I would sky dive, because the ground doesn't really approach.. until you're way down.

Glass floors frighten me up high and I am nervous walking over them.

Going down steps that are really steep- like on mountains give me the sh*ts, because of a fear of slipping.

I would more call the fears Fear of Drowning, Fear of Falling, and Fear of slipping.

That is a really interesting theory - I am not afraid of any sort of animal or bug - I mean, if I saw a black widow or a rattlesnake I'd stay away and while I'm not afraid of the possums eating out of my cat food on my back porch, I'm not going to walk up to them, either . . . but I don't have the 'OH MY GOD!! !!' reaction a lot of people do to these animals . . .
I LOVE to scuba dive . . .

I like to look out over heights, but I'm always afraid I'm going to jump off - so that makes me nervous . . .
I'm scared of wierd things like baby dolls and paper towels . . .

I don't like heights without something to hold on to, but this is due to poor balance.

I don't like water much and especially deep dark murky water; I, too, fear what I cannot see. And I don't like putting my head under water. I used to really fear it. Now it's just a preference.

I have no fear of closed spaces.

I have a discomfort with open/bare rooms-- not sure how to explain that-- and my Physiological Psychology room is actually like this (I sit by the window). I think this discomfort is mostly sensory though.

I fear no animals though I get a little jumpy around roaches.

But I have a phobia of vomiting/vomit and this has also turned into a phobia of even gagging (associations and all). I also have a phobia of the movie, The Ring (I'm not joking).

I freak out about heights as well... like it took me over an hour to abseil down a 25m cliff that was on a small slope (like not steep) and if I'm walking on something that has a steep slope to the side I freak out as well. Even going up the Eiffel Tower was scary, I would not let go of the supports that held the whole thing up  .
I also get claustraphobic easily, coz I got stuck in a lift once and I've totally freaked out ever since.
Hmmm I hate swimming and having weeds and stuff curling around my legs, I always get scared somethings gonna eat my feet, lol. And I get scared of the dark coz i usually leave clothes lieing about and if it's a white colour I can see it and when they make weird shapes I get scared and start imagining it's some weird alien shape thats hunting me *makes weird face* but yeah, lol. There are other things but I cannot remember them right now!

personally, i am fine with heights as long as i am physically secure- i'd rather be standing on top of a high building (with barriers to protect me from going over the edge) than standing on a step-ladder with only my ability to balance to rely on because i'm quite clumsy and there's an increased chance i will come to harm compared to someone who has good gross motor co-ordination, so i would not describe this fear as a phobia because it is rational. i would feel a little bit nervous on a tall building even with safety barriers but it would be an enjoyable scariness, like watching a horror film or being on a roller-coaster.

I couldn't have said this better myself. :) I dislike it slightly when I cannot see the bottom but realize it is just as difficult to drown in water that is thirty feet deep as it is in water that is ten feet deep.

I am terrified of spiders (Astarael's avatar freaks me out). I scared of riding roller coasters, swimming in deep water, and every aspect of vomiting (seeing another person doing it, me doing it, smelling it, hearing it etc).

Interesting, I am afraid of all those things. I don't mind flying, but if I'm in a tall building I freak out.....I do not like swimming in the ocean becasue I am afraid of being in deep water (and I live in HAWAII!! !), and I have a fear of going into or having to drive through tunnels, they are to tight and cramping to me...not enough space.

So that's interesting.
