I have much more empathy for animals than I do for humans. I don't feel very connected to the human race as a whole. But there are individuals for which I feel empathic when they are suffering.

But honestly, in most cases I would choose the life of an animal over a human (if a choice HAD to be made) as long as there were no repercussions I would have to fear for such a choice like arrest or ridicule.

I agree, why can't they use a little empathy for me every now and then.
What they seem to do is project their feelings onto me, and completely misunderstand my point of view. This leads me to the conclusion that all this empathy and TOM is really just concensus. It is the ability to assume everyone thinks like you. It is pure delusion, though it works because the majority of people do think alike.
