The most credible refutation I've seen is that a few extremists are speaking for all of the lakotas without actually representing the tribes or the tribal government. If anyone has any other info, I'd love to see it.

I honestly do not know enough about Native American politics to judge on this.

Some backstory:

I remember the 1973 siege, and the subsequent legal defence campaigns for the American Indian Movement militants involved. The antecedents to these events don't go as far back as (for e.g.) the Balkan conflicts, but at least to the late 1800s.

This whole thing is a joke. The Indian Nations were never part of this government from the get go. There was no divorcement and there was no seceding. They are not governed by the US Constitiution by choice, but by default and this is how it's been from day one. They are and continue to be a nation of tribes with their own laws and system.

You got it right. Russell Means (aka: Hugo Chavez wannabe) deigns to speak for the entire Lakota nation. He's an activist, not any kind of chosen representative.

This is destructive grandstanding at its worst.

I have an idea: If their no longer a part of the United States, why don't we just deny them all goverment services? That should put a stop to this little thing.

Have you seen the conditions on some of those reservations? They don't get much in the way of government services as it is.

Not much better for some of the Aboriginal communities down here in Australia. :(
