I have a lot of sensory issues, with sounds particularly. Sometimes sound hurts. Sometimes it is irritating- even sounds that I like, for instance music.
There have been times I thought my head would explode due to sound (for instance when in the past I have worked in housekeeping and had to vacuum) or when I have been in a car with someone who insisted on playing music loudly, or when my husband plays tabla (an especially resonant pair of hand drums), or when there are blowers or fans anywhere just doing their jobs, blowing.
Ear plugs are one of the greatest inventions, ever.
Helicopters are not.
For some reason, sounds have not been bothering me as much the past few days. He is playing tabla now and it is NOT hurting the inside of my head and that, my WP friends, is a wonderful thing. Maybe the new High Efficiency Furnace that I regret having had installed will not force me awake in the morning (get it, forced air, LOL).
(I am not getting into touch or smells in this post, but let me just end with my observation that the sensory stuff is probably my most obvious ASD attribute in the workplace, aka "real life.")
Love, River "please do not touch me" Otter

I wish i could wear ear plugs all day long. I hate noises, loud or small, unless I know exactly when and how loud the sound will appear.

I know how you guys feel.

Lawnmowers and leafblowers irritate me so much. Too bad I have to deal with them every damn week...

Sometimes when I'm driving, I have to turn off the radio, but that is never enough, because there is always the car noises! Ugh! I guess I should carry around earplugs in my car.

I used to have a cubicle across from a guy that had the radio on a country station for 9 hours per day. I wanted to shoot myself in the head. I'd wear headphones without any music playing just so I could have silence. Now I'm in a quiet room with just two other guys that are both respectfully quiet.

I've also had problems with crowded arenas!

Peoples breathing and people eating can really irritate me.

I find it helps if I take deep breaths and focus on some think else, because the more I focus on the thing that irritates me the more intense and stressed I can become.

I find sudden noise hurts my insides and im sure its obvious because i respond so badly.I have looked everywhere and can find nothing on noise hurting internally only noise hurting the ears and head. The best way i can describe it is noise going through me painfully.I have had ear/head pain but that is more rare and seems to happen with strange things like radio waves and most of the teen buzz ring tone specially the lower pitched ones. Also there is a few seconds on the spin cycle of the washing machine i dont like.Lawnmowers i used to enjoy listening to as a young child i used to trance out almost to them and they reminded me it was summer which i liked.

Why aren't these things illegal? Such noisy wastes of fossil fuels. I have an old-fashioned lawnmower, the kind with two DNA-helix looking blades that just sounds like flipflipflipflipflip.

My problems are tacticle and noise, so I can relate. If I am overstimulated, everything becomes difficult. Lights are brighter, noises are louder, my tactile defensiveness goes into overdrive and basically I just want to scream/escape.

Mostly I can tune these things out, but I know what you mean. My sister always had more sensory issues than I did, but I think things have swung the other way, now (as with much, I think increased levels of exhaustion have an effect, everything gets harder).

I dunno, how big's your garden? I couldn't manage ours without a leaf blower/vac, our house is a wind trap and we get the leaves from all the surrounding houses, dozens of bags of them (and that's with a 10-1 compression ratio once they've gone through the vac). People have a lot less time available nowadays, and the powered mowers and blowers are a lot more time efficient.

If volume is one of the issues, it might be worth considering something like these. They reduce volume across the board without muffling sound. Wonderful things. It's like someone turned down the volume on the world.

Really loud noises like loud engines, loud music (as long as it's something I like), explosions, and gun fire don't bother me. In fact like it as long as I don't have to try and listen to something or someone else at the same time. Or think too much. What bothers me are things like little lap dogs yapping. That shrill excuse for a bark that's more like a chirp and they're so high strung they go on and on forever. Very irritating. The way some people talk can be annoying, too. Their tone of voice can be annoying and so does listening to some foreign languages.

I don't like when people smack their lips when they eat. I also had to turn the television down when I was listening to my favorite music channel because it was unusually grating.
