I had a horrible dream followed by a disturbing occurrence happen last night. In the dream, I was watching a baseball game on television. All of sudden everyone in the stadium was being shot by machine guns.

This is where it gets scary. I have never had anything like this happen before.

I woke up from the dream very disturbed to say the least. It was still dark. On the ceiling of my bedroom, I saw symbols that were being highlighted by a light. Kind of like a flashlight, but not as bright. The characters looked something like Chinese writing. Next to the symbols, cursive english began to appear. The words "I be evil" were written.

I did have some sort of dream that involved me being possessed a few weeks ago, but I had just been talking about the excorsist movie with my psychiatrist. I always had it in the back of my mind that I am possessed.

Is there another place I can ask this question where I can get an answer?

I am not taking medication.

Sounds like you might be hallucinating. Or still dreaming.

Sorry, it's just I don't really believe in evil spirits so I won't even consider answering "yes".

hmmm, I think possession is very common, banal even. Many many people are, after all, we're all just puppets for a couple of puppetmasters (in a christian sense). So movies like the Exorcist can give a false impression, most of the time you wouldn't know you were dealing with a possessed person and there isn't any bizarre supernatural phenomena involved. They seem like everyone else.

Is it possible the writing on the ceiling was also part of a dream, that you weren't actually awake, just thought you were.

I think since the topics been on your mind, that can affect what you dream about too.

Not sure what to say JW, because I seem to recall you're nominally Jewish. I'm not sure what their view of such things is. It sounds like you're having a scary time anyway. I don't really see what you've described as possession, since you haven't done anything. It sounds more like you have a sense of having evil around you, close to you.

If you want protection from evil the standard thing is praying, lots of the psalms are for that purpose, protection from evil.

There are no evil spirits. Your perception is the result of the human brain's abilities for pattern recognition. Anyone who has taken a hallucinogen knows all too well how the brain can invent things that aren't really there.

Gawd!! ! That is EXACTLY why I no longer have anything to do with church or religion!! !

No, you are NOT possessed by an evil spirit! It is just a dream, just random patterns in the brain. If you want to see REAL evil look all around you. Any time any one mistreats another human being or even an animal, THAT is evil! What is evil is people telling you that your dreams are evil or that you are possessed by an evil spirit!

I just wonder how many "Christians" are out there suffering from undiagnosed mental or physical problems and afraid to seek help precisely because of this mentality. I know from personal experience that it caused me much needless suffering. If there had been someone in any of my church groups who had said, I think you have Aspergers and here is where you can go find out more about it, it would have made all the difference in the world. But they did not because they are not conditioned to think in those terms. I also have temporal lobe epilepsy and again--I delayed seeking medical help because I thought I was dealing with a spiritual problem. Karen Armstrong went through a similar experience in "The Spiral Staircase". As soon as she mentioned her "fuzzy spells" and how no one in her convent knew how to deal with them, I thought, Get Thee to a Neurologist! (Eventually she did and the diagnosis--temporal lobe epilepsy). There was a woman in one church I attended who told me quite seriously that the reason I had seizures (nobody knew about the Asperger's then) was because I listened to the song "Stairway to Heaven" and that attracted evil spirits into my brain! I must add she was pretty prominent in prayer circles and viewed as an expert on spiritual things.

My advice is that if you find yourself surrounded by people who think this way, then for your own health and sanity, get out of that situation as soon as possible. I cannot stress this strongly enough.

even the catholic church says that demonic possessions are incredibly rare. Also, if you think you're possessed, you're pretty definitely not.

Forgive me, I misunderstood that part. But I seriously suggest, I would keep track of these sort of things (if they continue to happen) and whatever might have set them off, and GO SEE A NEUROLOGIST. Granted, I have no real love for the medical profession, but there have been times when they have been helpful. I was very, very lucky that when I did end up having a grand mal seizure (because my earlier "spells" had gone untreated for so long) that I was NOT behind the wheel when it happened or I might very well have killed myself and possibly others. I really cannot stress this enough. If you are experiencing temporal lobe seizures (and they take many, many forms, visions and hallucinations are just one of them) and you do not get help, you could end up endangering yourself and others. And now I am done preaching.

It was a visual hallucination or you were asleep when you were not. It happens to me sometimes. You're not "possessed," there is no such thing, your mind just played a trick on you and scared you badly.

You don't need to hope I'm right, I am. There are no such thing as being possessed, that's just a pious superstition or a horror-movie plot. Sometimes when I dream, I'll wake up and for a few moments the lines between dreaming and waking are blurred, and my dream will "superimpose" itself on reality. Your problem has to do with psychology, not spirituality. Don't be so grim!

Well, as the only believer here, I guess I'm outnumbered, but yeah they do recommend keeping it light and cheerful anyway, stop watching horror movies, keep it sunny and bright.

It'll either get better or worse, so let us know. Could be real interesting.

...but just in case, this is the psalm they recommend..

Makes me wonder what your stress level might be right now.

Back in the olden days, I had been drafted into the Army, my stress level was very high for a very long time. This was back in the Vietnam era.
Your description of the oriental letters appearing was pretty common for me, both in sleep and a daydream state. Other things were happening as well.
It was big time stress, melt down of epic proportions for me. They put me on downers and thought I might be epileptic.
What I was seeing was really a window of thoughts, conflicts all amplified by the anxiety, trap of what I was in and projected.
I look back on it now as entertainment. It even was when it was happening, but it sure could be unnerving at times.

There are some simple things that might be helping your dream states to be more livid. Something as simple as what you eat before you sleep.
If these continue to be disturbing, keep happening on a regualar pattern, I'd see a doc about my stress level before I'd go to the church.
