I just saw this and had a few questions

http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt12459.html

What is cross posting?

What does he mean when he talks about posting just to post?

Thank you.

Technically, you have violated the WP rules 120 (less one?) times, by posting, before reading the rules.

Cross Posting is basically copying and pasting the same (or a near duplicate) message into multiple threads.

Actually, it has just occurred to me that, technically, this means that a lot of posts in the "Getting to know each other" forum are against the rules! However, the point there is obvious... a short welcome message onto someone's introductory thread is just... nice. It makes the new member aware that people do notice them, and read their posts. Even if greeters often don't have anything beyond "hello" to say, this time round, usually one or two will go beyond that.

The "posting just to post" is the thing where someone posts just one line (or even just one word!) in a thread, when they obviously haven't bothered to read anything in that thread. I.e. they are just trying to increase their post count to make it look as if they contribute to the board, when they are doing nothing but cluttering the place up.

Again, the "Off the Wall: Forum Games, Quizzes, Roleplaying, etc." forum is a bit of an exception to this. There, many of the threads are just one word per post. However, the game/amusement value is there, and that's the intention of that forum.

I think posting just to post means posting without really adding anything useful to the discussion, with the sole intention of raising your post count. Like saying lol if someone said something funny, and nothing else. The only place that is an exception is the off the wall section, where nothing anyone says is useful. :D

Alright, thank you, gentlemen.

I used to have some sort of hug thread going just about everyday on my old board. The idea was to give out a hug to anyone that wanted one (if they wanted one, since they didn't have to accept it), noticing that it helped when people were lonely, depressed, bothered with their autism, sickness, etc. And it was to encourage them to show someone else they loved them, hopefully in a way that was platonic and would maybe do the same thing for that person.

But when one died I think I would have one posted the next day or so.

I will pay attention, though, so that I don't end up with a slew of threads like that going.
