Ive noticed that WP automatically censors the 'F word' but not always the 'S' word(s**t). I dont really understand why the word f**k is considered so obscene. I consider s**t to be FAR more disgusting than sex!

This is a very touch and go subject...

The reason both are censored out is because we have younger users and also users who prefer not to see any of them..

I don't understand why this would be a problem. You know what's really being said, so nothing's truly being censored and the filters remove that moment of shock for those who would rather not be confronted with profanity. I think it sets the tone for appropriate behavior on the site, too. When you swear and see that your words were changed like that, it sends the message "crude behavior is not the accepted norm here."

"Touch and go" means that the outcome is uncertain. Maybe you meant touchy?

I think both of you missed something while reading the OP. He is not bemoaning censorship in general, but he is saying that the word "s**t" is not getting censored in some cases and that it should be for consistency's sake. Perhaps he can come back and link us to an example.

Viska-you are correct. No one has ever really explained just exactly Why swearing is considered "adult language" and why swearwords are censored for the sake of 'young ones'(i.e.: kids). I asked once on AFF and Amy Nelson just said "I dont know" . Surely there is a REASON for these social rules. The ONLY explanation I can come up with is This: There's a presumption on the part of adutls that if kids read,watch, or hear adults swearing that they(the kids) will assume that its OK to talk like that in "polite company". So adults punish kids who swear and censor swearing to reinforce that such lnaguage is socially unacceptable.

Dude, it's socially constructed. The only reason the concept of swear words exists is because most people agree to behave as if they exist. There's no real "logic" to it.

It's simple, the site's owner loves censorship. (he should move to china, that's the place for him)

I don't get offended by anything but I don't see why we need to bother with swear words in writing - when talking, that's different, 'cos you can't edit them.

I usually try, in front of my kids to modify them to phrases like the following - if I have to use them at all.

"oh fornicate me"

or

"sounds like bovine defecation"

Why?

Well, then if my kids start repeating things, then the finger is pointed squarely at me - otherwise I can blame the TV.

oh and in Australia, the badness rating goes

1. C word - really really bad
2. F word - fairly common but still bad
3. S word - almost an everyday occurrence

Ok, maybe this is what the OP was talking about. Note the lack of censorship in the following: BS. Yet, this is censored: s**t.
