I recently got some pyrite from a gem and rocks magazine.

I'm not sure it's real. How do I check if it's real?

Once I went to a river, and all the shore sparkled with gold flecks, like a type of glitter. I think that was pyrite.

richard, can you ID this type of rock? They are a bit shiny, and flake off in layers.

If it flakes apart really easily, I'm willing to bet it's mica.

It looks more like slate to me with some iron staining. However, if you can see all the way through thin slices it is likey mica.

I can't see through the flakes, so maybe it is slate. I will have to look at samples of both mica and slate. Thanks for the imput. :)
