I managed to make some friends - need some advice
I have been diagnosed with Asperger's, but I am also a recovering alcoholic. Alcoholics Anonymous is filled with spiritual, accepting people, so I have managed to at least hang out with them. They only interpret my Asperger's as "weirdness" the same sort of weirdness that would exist in someone who's nerdy, or geeky.
Of course, they don't share my interests. They're mostly ex-frat boys or sports nuts, and there has been an occasional rejection scare, but so far everything's been fine. My question is this:
I've tried to go to nearby geeky clubs, such as an anime club, or the middle ages reenactment club, or the gamers club, but I live by Rutgers, so the groups are HUGE and I get extremely nervous and don't talk (which in turn, makes the other people there nervous and they ignore me). If I can socialize with people outside my AA support group, then I don't see why I can't start making friends with people who's company I will enjoy.
