Being a moderator or any other type of leader anywhere is not about being accepted as elite. It is about having a skill and/or personal traits that will benifit the group as a whole.

No Sean. In the WP context it's being chummy with the other moderators, who then appoint you. In that way it's main purpose is to benefit the central moderator elite, anything filtering down to the group as a whole is secondary to that.

There are a few moderators here who seem to act with the necessary "skill and/or personal traits" you mention. Quite a few, though, are just friends of friends, so to speak, and although they might be decent people, they ain't moderator material.

I don't think we should kid ourselves that it's all hard work, anyway. I expect 20% of them do 90% of the work; the others are just along for an ego booster.

Personally, I hope that the mods never promote anybody to be a mod who campaigns for it.

But sycophants are welcome!
