today i was offered an invitation to join my school's rugby team. i think it's great and all. it would be a prime way to gain some confidence, meet some new people and get some much needed exercise.

yep, a lot of positives, except there's one small detail that is making me not want to join

the whole: danger, getting hurt thing

i've been told a whole bunch of times that i should try out, cus i have the type of body that could work well with the game.

i'm a big guy, but the whole getting hurt thing erks me

what are you guys's opinions?

thanks in advance if anybody can help

i have till friday for tryouts

I played rugby. Not for very long of course, I have other sensory issues that eventually precluded it. But... as your dad did, so shall the son . :?

You'll find that you'll be taught all the techniques to avoid injuries at contact. (i.e. scrums, tackles, mauls etc...)

Also, if you do all your exercises as your coaches will instruct you to do, you'll be just as big as the opposition (if that is what you are worried about.)

All that said... it is a pretty full on game. You will get bumps and bruises and all that goes with playing a full contact sport.

I don't want to minimize your concerns about injuries, but as Izaak said, you will receive instruction about avoiding injuries and playing safely. Of course, you're not going to be able to entirely avoid getting banged up, at least a little, since that's part of contact sports.

I say give it a try and see how you like it; let your experience, rather than your preconceived notions, guide you. If you don't like it, well, you're not talking about a lifetime commitment here. And how will you know, unless you try it?

I have to admit that I have always gravitated toward contact sports (football, hockey, boxing) because those are the sports I have tended to be good at. Some of that is no doubt based on my build (compact with low center of gravity). Part of it might be an Aspie thing, too; I really don't know. There, I've disclosed my bias which is based on personal preference. :)

While I haven't played rugby, I know a few guys who have and they've had a blast with it. Also, I have played tackle (American) football without padding quite a few times, so I imagine that's pretty similar. Lots of fun!

Again, I say go for it. Be safe and sensible, but give it a try. I hope you'll let us know how it goes, and good luck with the tryouts and whatever you decide to do with the game!

Stefman,

I am glad you have less anxiety now. If you decide to try out for the team, I hope it goes great for you. Above all, I hope you'll have fun out there!

I loved playing rugby, it's a great game. At school level I didn't see too many injuries, so that's in your favour. Plus your size will help you. If you're one of the bigger guys then your mass means you're more likely to be able to absorb the punishment better. I'd try out and see how you get on. If you find it's not to your liking nobodies going to force you to play.
