I am very often accused of things I didn't do. 15 years ago, it was funny. But now that I'm in my late 30's - it's getting to be a real tired act. I am so angry that people constantly accuse me of things I am not responsible for.

Most recently happened last night. I was at a convienant store getting an Icee - a sweet frozen fountain-type drink. They had two flavors - "Cherry" and "Jolly Rancher Green Apple." I wanted to try them both so squeezed a little dollup of each flavor into the cup and did an impromtu taste test. I chose my flavor and started pouring the drink. Being an icy mixture, it would fill up the cup and then immediately settle leaving more room in the cup to pour more. A couple more pours and it would be full. But then the ladyt working behind the counter shouts above the noise in the store - with several customers in the store "YOU CAN'T KEEP REFILLING DRINKS AND DRINKING THEM AT THE COKE MACHINE!"

Here we go again...

I continued to top my drink off, getting the most product for my Dollar. When my drink was full I brought it up to the counter. I was really, really pissed off. In a very assertive, very matter-of-fact tone of voice, I asked the lady "O.K., what was that you said about the drink machine??"

She says "You can't keep pouring a soda and continue to drink it at the fountain machine."

I reply (in a very heavy FYI tone of voice) "That's not what I was doing. I was seeing what each flavor tasted like so I could make a choice. I have a right to test which flavor I'd like to drink, don't I?"

She just stares at me.

I say "I kept pouring the drink because it would settle."

And then she just says "Alright..." in that 'What. Ever.' tone of voice. Then I pay for the crap and walk out.

-----------

The first ten hundred thousand times I have been wrongly acused of something was a little funny. But the LAST ten hundred thousand times has really started to wear me down. I am always accused of things I would never do. And it really does hurt my feelings. I would never cheat anyone out of anything. I would never take advantage of someone. And I would never do anything I have EVER been accused of.

I was even accused by my 5th grade teacher of flipping her off. (Which I didn't. I saluted her after she gave me a tip on a spelling lesson. I'm going to give her the finger after her helping me????)

Anyone else here often accused of things you didn't do?

That used to happen to me, in elementary school.

Many people who have the same interests as me tend to be hippies or hipsters (I'm not), and I am worried that if I associate with those people, I will be accused of drug possession, even though I would never dream of touching an illegal substance. Also, I will be condemned to hell if I associate with them.

This is why I limit my dating pool to people who have the same interests and are also Christians. Also, I will only date other Aspies because of the bad experience I had with an ex-girlfriend, who was an NT.

BTW, my interests are animated sitcoms (especially South Park), and indie films/music.

I think this happens to people regardless of whether they are NT/Aspie. People make assumptions and say things without thinking all the time. Sure it's annoying, but I've found it's a lot easier to just carry on with out making it a big deal. When you think about how big the world is, it doesn't really matter what someone assumes. Of course, as with everything, there are occasions when you do need to stand up for yourself. You just have to learn how to find a distinction between the arguments that are worth having or not.

...If you're a Christian, why would you be condemmed for associating with them? Afterall, Jesus associated with prostitutes and tax collectors.

I just feel more comfortable around other Christians.

Fair enough. But how can you reliably tell the difference between Christians and hippies and hipsters? And what about the Christian hippies and hipsters?

How would I tell the difference?

I only do if I'm with my little cousins. Whatever they do wrong, I'm always the one that gets blamed. Other than that, there really hasn't been anything that recent.

I agree with Ray. I think it happens to NT's and people on the spectrum. I think some of us who're on the spectrum may be more sensitive to it because of a strong identification with certain principles. That's something that I experience. I was perseverating a little earlier today on an interaction that never happened in which someone reminded me not to do something that I would never do. It was triggered by some words from that individual that didn't seem very direct but were entirely unrelated.

Once at the Tim Horton's where I worked, one for the other workers told me at random, when I was carrying some cup lids somewhere to put on cups, not to put the lids in my mouth because the customers didn't like that. I had never!

It happens to me too. It's frustrating after awhile, because I feel like I'm "too old" to have to deal with this issue. 8O

I was when I was younger. No more. Tangentially, my recommendation is to never play the game Werewolf (also known as Mafia) if you're an aspie. ;)

When I was 20 (I'm 28 now), and still attending junior college, I was accused by a couple of young women of following them, when it was pure coincidence that going to my class meant traveling in the same direction as them. The campus police told them they were overreacting.
