I don't really like the news, but someone else was watching it today and I caught something about a 78 year old trying to cross the road, and then this reckless car slams into him, and then just drives off and leaves him there... and that's really bad enough and of course it is a given that there are bad apples in the world, but... what made it even more disturbing is that no one who seen it happen did anything to help him!

So what the hell is wrong with the human race? It is things like this which really make me glad the world is going to end in 2012. If people are this terrible, then I say good riddance. The planet should be purged of our presence like the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, and evolution needs to start again with a clean slate and hopefully there will come along some superior sentient species which won't make war, destroy the ozone, or leave elderly people to die on the streets... we had our chance, and we blew it. All the good people need to get into some Noah's Ark type thing and then the rest of the people should be wiped out with a flood or nuclear weapons or something... and then when the dust settles, then the good people can come back and rebuild a better world.

So anyways, why are people like this? Not just one psycho, but entire groups of them.... why? Is this what we are evolving into? Because if so, I don't like it. Gaia needs to abort us before we become the evil self-centered creature we're heading to become...

We all have psychopatic thoughts now and then, but no psychopatic tendencies. Most of us have violent thoughts now and then, this has been well researched and proven and very normal to humans. The thing is, we have a conscious which stops us from putting those thoughts into practice, so most people never commit any crimes. But the violent thoughts are there for the vast majority of people, we just know to control them and ignore them. So if humans have a psychopatic side depends on your interpretation really.

Seems we are too busy killing animal kind off to actually learn anything from them. Where else in animal kind do they hunt for sport, kill for money or material gain, cheat on each other, steal for the sake of stealing, abuse each other (whether sexually or physically) Hmmmm? Only humanity has developed into something that carries on these practises. Do animals start wars due to religion, or ideologies? f**k no! But humans can't wait to invade another country for the sake of some mythical being. Evolution be damned, I personally think that humanity, or society has DE-volved into the terrible state it's in, and has brought all this bad Karma on itself. Now what to do..... Frigged if I know, but something has to be done, or our atomic structure will be spread across the Universe with the help of a nuclear explosion.

I think modern societies tend to reward sociopathy. The person with the least conscience will have a easier to getting ahead than someone with one. And in that way it's sort of pushing humanity to evolve (moreso culturally, since physical evolution happens so slowly) to become more sociopathic.

Maybe it's because humans evolved mostly in small groups where people couldn't get away with doing wrong to someone and then running off to escape consequence (since you couldn't survive alone). Or even that the consequences (for both the victim and the perpetrator) would be close enough to "home" that people would be less inclined to do it in the first place. The concept of stealing (or whatever) might've even been weird to people.

There is a thread not so far from this one currently where people would actually commend the person who hit the 78 year old.

We live in an age of ignorance. What can we do? Nothing enters the minds of the people who are too busy acquiring works.

I don't know if people are any worse nowadays than they ever were. Certainly, we hear more about the evils in society and it does seem that sociopathic behaviour is rewarded or at least not as severely punished as it should be. For instance, jail terms for terrible crimes such as violent rape and murder and torture are a complete joke in some states.

I actually do believe we are regressing morally as we progress technologically. There most certainly was crime and atrocities before, but many factors prevented it from being widespread. Now, what inhibits the people?

I just can't imagine why nobody would even try to help that old man, people just don't care
or are to complacent to give a damn, maybe the atheists are right, people have no souls.
It would probably be better if the human race went extinct, in my opinion, I don't really
consider myself a part of it anyhow.

I don't see much evidence for this. I think crime rates have been dropping for a while now. Also, there is a major factor inhibiting the people, their best interests are found in cooperation.

It is simply two things:

1. As the population gets bigger, so does the amount of sociopaths and psychopaths.

2. In this litigious society, those that try to help are more likely to get sued than those who actually hurt with malice aforethought.

Because a person has a soul does not mean they are aware of it, hence the apparent lack of one.

I am considering the developed nations, not the middle income nations which are still in the process of becoming.

A quick off topic:

One question, who is the person in your avatar? I keep thinking it's Jerry Stiller

New Orleans? Most places with complete social disarray as caused by a hurricane would have major problems. LA has been had a drop in crime for about a decade now.
