when changing an 11 month-old, how do you keep her from getting her hands all through it and smearing it all over herself and in her mouth?

Take it away more quickly, so she cannot reach it?

Tough when it's slimy and all over her butt as well as the diaper. We try to wipe with the diaper but sometimes it can only get so much in one pass. Put the diaper aside and reach for a wet-wipe and she's got her hands all messy. If they were well formed nuggets, we wouldn't have a problem.

Give her a slight slap on the hands and say no. Not to hurt but enough to communicate your disapproval.

I'm very hesitant about striking her even if it is just a tap.

For one, at that age, I doubt she'd know what the slap was for. "Was it for me trying to sit up, breathing, having my hands down there, having pooped in the first place?"

as my computer says when trying to troubleshoot, "skip this and try something else".

Ah, you learn the parent wipe.

Hold both her hands and feet in one hand, and wipe with the other. It takes practice, but it keeps them away from the poop, and then you have clear reign over your poopy diaper killing spree. Once she's clean, then you can let her wiggle free and put on the new diaper. Just make sure you have like 3 or 4 wipes ready, and you're good to go.

By about one and a half to two, she will learn not to put her hands there when you changing her, if she's still in the crap pants then.

PLEASE! Don't slap her :(
Just always make sure she has something she loves in her hands and is distracted before you start changing her- toy, book, animal, any object will do. THis always worked with my son.
I think 99% of parenting little kids is the art of distraction.

Hitting her is not the answer.

distraction works most of the time, but I have had 2 very wiggly boys. At times i have had to change them on the floor (make sure to get EVERYTHING together before hand you will need) put them between your legs feet towards you put your legs over their arms and pin them down a sec, hold feet with hand and just go quick. Like the person who said hold all the limbs in one hand, just takes practice.

Also, my kids seemed to have been fascinated with the baby wipes, if you can spare a clean one and you can go fast enough that they can't get it torn to pieces in and in their mouth they can play with it a couple seconds, which is just about enough time to get the "job" done.
