I'm up to chapter 8 of the book and it's quite a good read, light and entertaining, fish out of water stuff.

The Julie Burchill feud bit is quite good, takes up an early chapter or two. I wonder who would play her in the film?

In his musings on America and on other things he says (prior to his stint at Vanity Fair, and some years before) he attended a USA uni for 12 months as an (arts) exchange student at the height of PC postmodernism, which interests me because I also attended uni in that era. He quotes Alec De Toqueville (not sure if i got the name right, i know about him, just not in detail) on American democracy and says that it actually supresses individuality and thought and it's a reasonably convincing case that democracy fosters and enforces a herd mentality.
