I'm not sure whether to define myself as AS or HFA, but I'm looking forward to talking to everyone.

I am 42 yr. old mom with 11 yr. son with AS and two typical daughters, 8 & almost 2. I know I have AS since my son was diagnosed 4 yrs ago and I studied symptoms. It is great to figure out why I thought I was on the wrong planet and everybody seemed to have a secret on conduct and forgot to tell me the "rules". I homeschool and have a very lonely son. We are involved in outside activities but he has not found a friend. I have been praying. I am checking out this website to see that it is safe for him and maybe get some moral support. Any response would be appreciated. I have not figured out how to use the chat.

I never was homeschooled. I went to kindergarten and first grade in public schools, then my parents switched me to a private school, and I went back to public schools from 6th grade on. In the private school, there were so few kids that everyone was at least at acquaintance level with everyone else. In the public school, there were so many kids that finding someone geeky like me was easy. I never had many friends, but I probably would have had none if I were homeschooled.

This site is pretty safe -- most everyone is pretty friendly, and nobody looks down on you for not having friends or being socially inept, since most of us are or were like that. The Adult forum has an age limit -- no one under 18 can read it. Just make sure the age is set right on his profile. The PPR forum (Politics, Philosophy, and Religion), while fascinating and informative, is also the home of the most controversial topics and rather heated debate. If you let him post in that one, I'd recommend going over how not to start a flamewar with him.

If you have him post a thread in this forum, he'll get welcomed by at least several people, which would probably be nice for someone who's lonely.
