Breaking: Man held for Obama assassination threat
Posted: 04:31 PM ET
(CNN) — A man is being held in Florida on charges he threatened to assassinate Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, according to court documents.

An affidavit filed by a Secret Service agent in U.S. District Court claims that Raymond Hunter Geisel, of Marathon, Florida, threatened to "kill, kidnap and cause bodily harm upon a major candidate for president of the United States, that is, Senator Barack Obama."

The affidavit says Geisel made the threats while attending a bail bondsman training class in Miami. Another person in the class quoted Geisel as saying that "he hated George W. Bush and that he wanted to put a bullet in the president's head," according to the Secret Service.

During an interview with the Secret Service, Geisel denied threatening Obama, but told agents that "if he wanted to kill Senator Obama he would simply shoot him with a sniper rifle."
He later said that comment was a joke, the agent said in the document.

A search of Geisel's 1998 Ford Explorer and hotel room in Miami uncovered a loaded 9mm handgun, knives, dozens of rounds of ammunition including armor-piercing types, body armor, military-style fatigues and a machete. The SUV was wired with flashing red and yellow emergency lights.

Geisel told the Secret Service he was originally from Bangor, Maine, and had been living recently in a houseboat in the Florida Keys town of Marathon, according to court documents. He said he used the handgun for training for the bail bondsman class, had the knives for protection and used the machete to cut brush in Maine.

In the affidavit, the Secret Service said Geisel told agents that he suffered from psychiatric problems including post-traumatic stress disorder, but he couldn't provide the names of any facilities where he sought treatment.

If you read the full article, it all actually sounds pretty vague, I'm surprised that they are taking it so seriously unless there is some other piece of evidence that they are withholding. Nothing that the guy had was all that out of the ordinary, especially for someone seeking employment as a bondsman. I'm curious about this "armor piercing" ammunition that he had, if I had to guess I'd bet that what the guy really had was some sort of military surplus ammo, most of which is AP by it's very nature. I've got half a case of the stuff myself, it's dirt cheap and easily available. If anything, it sounds like this guy's biggest problem was lack of discretion and getting a bit carried away with his politics. I'm sure similar things have been said in bars all over the south, this guy just had the bad luck to have someone snitch on him. If no other evidence is out there, I can't see a whole lot coming out of this, other than some possible sympathy votes for Obama.

I wonder if he randomly spammed threads with posts that had nothing to do with the subject at hand...

Could be a schizophrenic who thinks he's one of Arthur's Knights and forgot his Thorazine. Who knows?

It is surprising how people can be singled out. Talking with a big-mouth can really get you in trouble, especially if somebody up-high has an agenda.

I think you're missing the point. Say you're having a political discussion with somebody, and W comes up. The person you're talking to says "yeah I hate that W, I wish someone would shoot him already, and don't get me started on that Obama, I'll shoot him myself if he's elected". Would your first impulse be to call the Secret Service? If mine was, half the activists in Seattle would have been locked up 1 year into the Bush presidency. It's one of those situations where it could have been handled differently, in a way that didn't involve the authorities and screw up this guy's life. A simple "you're not serious?" could have saved everyone a lot of trouble.

As to what he said to the SS, probably not the best thing he could have said in that situation, but I think that sort of mitigates against him being a master assassin. I just think they're blowing the whole thing out of proportion, it really does just sound like some poor guy opening his mouth in front of the wrong person. Now if they are holding back something else the guy had, like a take down suppressed rifle and charts of Obama's future whereabouts, then I could understand the brouhaha little better.

Well, I have a tendency to shoot my mouth off and wish horrible disasters upon certain inept politicians when they do something stupid and f**k up the economy or something similar. I'm sure the goverment is watching me, they watch everyone with strong opinions and misunderstood psychological diagnoses anyway. Probably the one reason I can get on the internet and type "George W Bush is an illiterate imbecile and a power-hungry warmonger who needs to either get his @$$ out of office or die trying" (a statement which will be red flagged for sure) without getting arrested is because the goverment knows I am incapable of being a threat to national security. I mean, what could a seventeen-year-old guy who owns no weapons and isn't part of a racial or religious profile (since the government seems to profile all Middle Easterners and Muslims as "potential threats" ever since 9/11 - no offense intended to the aforementioned) do to anybody of a rank high enough for the NSA to care? It seems the government doesn't care if I say those things because I am incapable of doing them. But say I was the son of an Arabian immigrant and I owned a couple of licensed guns. I say $#!+ like that, they throw me in jail. End of story. I guess my point is that a) freedom of speech is now a selective right and b) ownership of weapons is now considered a potential threat to national security, even if they are allowed. So, gun owners... watch what you say, since America seems to frown more upon you.

What would you surmise are the NRA's values?
