i just wondered how prominent a feature they were in autistic spectrum disorders.

personally, i used to have this habit of pacing the floor for a few minutes when excited or stimulated, and somebody recounted how recently when drunk, i was rocking back and forth. my ball skills aren't great, and i never learned to cycle or swim, perhaps because even at such a young age i had little faith in my physical co-ordination and feared falling and hurting myself or choking. i derive no pleasure at all from dancing either - it's not an instinctive urge as it appears to be for NTs.

Some few of us are great athletes, as my son could be if he chose. Most of us are klutzes. Since I'm so short in the proprioreceptive memory it took me years to learn how to type well.

I have been tentatively diagnosed with AS. I think I have selective coordination. I love to swim, run, and cycle, in fact they can almost be a form of stimming themselves when I can find my "go forever" zone. On the other hand, I am universally "afraid of the ball" (have been hit in the face many times as a child) and will not engage in any activity where I will get hit or contact others, not a big deal since I already avoid "team" anything.

My stimming is generally clicking or twirling pens or creasing paper, things that drive other people nuts in meetings.

I have excellent coordination and balance, but I constantly bump into things while walking. :?

Some physical things I do really well and others I can't do at all. Bicycling is my favorite stim but I don't have any others that are real obvious.

"Selective coordination." Now that's a good one. I've been known as a klutz my entire life, and yet there are things I do fairly well-like hopping on a pogo stick for HOURS. Walking seemed to be a problem, but I loved running short distances, I swear I could run like a gazelle.

I don't have many problems with physical co-ordination or movement. I used to have a funny walk from bad posture but I worked on it. Stimwise, only minor stuff.

Well, I've been told I am a beautifully coordinated and graceful dancer. Until I inevitably run into a wall, hit someone or knock someone's drink over.

What are stims? I keep reading this word on here but I don't know what it means. :?

My co-ordination is poor, but I wouldn't go as far as to say 'impaired' - I have trouble doing things like carrying drinks up stairs without spilling them, and I'm terrible at sports - but I hate most sport so it's not like I've ever tried to be any better. My handwriting is reasonable and I can swim, cycle and tie my shoelaces, so there's nothing 'abnormal' about my co-ordination; it's just not very good.

Dancing confuses me. I want to 'dance' sometimes but it's just weird random movement to me and I don't know if my dancing looks strange and silly or if all dancing is just weird random movement.

oooh- REALLY interesting question. its hard to say- im 35, and hated PE at shcool.

since then (until injury, and my gym closing) i have taught myself to swim and became a frighteningly fast swimmer (freightening as i kept bashing into the other swimmers in the fast lane who were slower than me- i was banned at one point!! GET OUT THE WAY!! !! !) and fencing and yoga. id run too, as i love it, but have dicky knees.

i def hate ball sports- its confusing- i think its becasue one has to concentrate on movement and poeple in multiple- like talking with several friends around a table- i just cant. team sports have the same effect- too much info at once!! learning things too, in groups, is impossible.
but i also seem to be selective- hate tennis and ball games in general- things coming at me!!- but love fencing. my co-ordination is variable- its hard to define, so would seem on that basis to be aspie related.

i would really reccomend swimming, however- i really took to back stroke (hence all the collisions)- its just you, the ceiling and the water. all you can hear is your own breath adn the water- and i love the sensation of the water, and pushing my muscles, and stretching really hard.
stimming- a little- finger rubbing, creasing paper, tapping pens etc- low fi.

"Stim" is short for stiumulation. Things like clicking pens, waving hands, rocking back and forth, even chewing on hair. Generally tends to relax.

In my case I tend to stim by shifting my balance from one side to the other and rocking in place, or waving my hands around. I try to not do this in public so I don't freak out the natives. Generally I stim when under any sort of strong emotion, be it excitement or anger or fear. It's a way for my mind to focus on ONE thing, ignore the rest, and deal with things as I can rather than just get completely overwhelmed and make a mess of the whole lot.

No coordination problems; I usually walk with my head down and to the side (think: Rain Man), but that's about it, O, I tend to have my hand curled up against my chest as much as I don't when I'm out and about. These seem to be neurological signs, but they don't affect my motor ability.

I "stim" more often than not (swaying, flapping, finger clicking, etcetera).

Thank you for explaining.

I make strange arm movements, clap my hands, rock back and forth or side to side, walk on my toes and probably many more things. I do it much more when I'm very happy or very nervous and upset. I only focus on it when I'm really upset. Is that stimming? I've never really thought of it as stimulation; just an odd habit.

lol at freaking out the 'natives'. I try not to do strange things in front of people I don't know but sometimes I end up doing it anyway because I'm not always aware of it.

I have no physical coordination issues.

My fine motor development has always been superior to that of my (non-autistic) pears.

And my gross motor development was also either normal or also advanced all the time.

I adore dancing and several kinds of sports.

I've always had a great deal of dexterity, coordination and balance.
