My son is 2 years 8 months old,
he loves Barney(12)/Blues clues(1)/tellatubbys(1).
I get all the shows from thrift and second hand shops.
I can hardly ever find anything except Barney shows.
But they are helping him learn, they drive me nuts at times but as much as he likes them he watches and learns.
No I do not let him sit and watch movies all day, but he does know how to work the VCR really well all on his own.

Any suggestions for other children's shows for a child his age that he may like?
Right now he really is not into cartoons. and I am more interested in the educational shows.

Whats your thoughts on them?
(no Barney hater comments please, I am more into it for the child)

You should have your son watch Nick Jr or the Disney channel on weekdays every morning. He will discover new shows that way. I don't know if you have cable or not. But on the weekends, CBS plays Nick Jr shows. There is also PBS he can watch on weekdays every morning. That will also introduce him to other shows.

We do not have cable nor any local channels.
If we watch anything at all it has to be bought or rented.

Well, when he gets a little older, I thoroughly recommend Reading Rainbow.
Ah.. nostalgia... just checked to make sure it was still on the air. The host has been doing it for 25 years and makes some really great suggestions.

Without doing too much research, I would recommend PBS's Between the Lions. You might have the best success with shows that utilize the Barney-esque puppet/human combination. Sesame Street also comes to mind... but I dont know the age range on that. (It's been 16 years since I was that old, give me a break!)

The Puzzle Place! Now there was a good show as well. It's all starting to come back to me. Unfortunately, doing a quick search, you'd be hard pressed to find that in it's discontinued, VHS format.

Have you gone to your local library? I know that my local library has a lot of children's shows on VHS. At least that was when I was younger, they are probably on DVD now. But anyways there is thousands of hours of free children's shows at my library. One of my favorites was rocky and bullwinkle. Go check out the libraries in your area and see what options they have available.

what about Thomas the Tank Engine ?

We try to limit our son's TV time too, but he does really love some TV shows. My favorite is Curious George, and my son LOVED Teletubbies when he was 2, but now that he's 3 he prefers Boohbah and Yo Gabba Gabba.

Look for "Bear in the big Blue House" on VHS- should easily find it used. My oldest DD LOVED that show- it is very educational too Jim Henson production company, characters licensed by Muppets Inc. Sesame street is also always a winner- If you can find "Play With Me Sesame" episodes, it's great for the little ones because it's only 1/2 hour long- better for short attention spans.

My kids are 8 mo, 5, ,6, and 10 now. I want to find them on DVD for my youngest in a year or so. My 6 y/o son with MR is a TV and movie addict and we limit him to 90-120 mins a day on school days(after HW is done) and he watches more on weekends. My 10 y/o with ASD rarely watches TV and her fav shows now are "Good Eats"(which is awesome because he takes a very scientific approach to cooking and explains the underlying reactions of foods, etc) and "Unwrapped"(History of certain foods) on the Food network. We Tivo them and she'll watch an episode or 2 a week. She's very interested in cooking right now. Good thing cuz I'm recovering from back surgery and am not able to do much in the way of cooking and cleaning yet.

My son loves that, since he loves trains and cars, Bob the Builder and he likes the Wiggles too

Oh, I love that show, lol! My son was watching it at age 2. It really has cross-age appeal. I haven't seen it for rent, however. Hope the OP can find it!

Yep, all the above were favorites of my son as a toddler.

Oh, we also used to rent a lot of videos from the "There goes a .... " series. My son always loved documentaries, really. Kid style, of course.

My son's favorite video when he was 2 was actually borrowed from his grandpa, a video of Scottish marching bands. No kidding. He LOVED watching that. And music is good for forming brain connections in those early years, right?

you might also try videos on how things work.....i can't remember the name of the show now, but there's a show that takes you on an inside tour of various factoried & how things are made

I bought my son a V-SMILE when he turned 3...it was the BEST investment I have ever made...He had it for almost 4 years...I bought games in both spanish and english and he learned SOOOO much from it...a friend who had a little girl was shocked that he knew so much and when she saw how much he had learned from it, bought her daughter one...I can't say enough about how great it was for him and building his vocabulary, learning to count, etc...


PS. the website www.spanishtoys.com has the games in spanish...you don't find them in the US stores...but this is realiable website...I ordered through them...

My son and I loved Thomas the Train & Little Bear.

My son likes Curious George, Sesame Street (the singing video with "Put Down the Ducky" is a fav.), and (gasp!) Superman. OK, Superman is a bit old for him, but he came upon it one day and really likes it. It's now a special treat for good behavior.
