My surname is really simple and its spelled exactly like it sounds. But yet, no one ever spells it right - usually they add extra letters.

There are also 2 L's in it, side by side. I thought my "accent" might be responsible for why people on the phone don't get that it is "ll" and not "OL" even though one would have to be an idiot to even consider there would be an O in it after hearing it pronounced.

Imagine the name is Hacknell. These people would record it is Hackneol, and even when I say that's not correct there are 2 l's, reply "thats what I have." So I started saying "..N E L as in Love L as in love."

And you know what, with 2 different people they still recorded it as Hackneol. And no matter how many times I told the one lady that there was no "O' but two L's, she kept repeating "thats what I have O L." 8O

I'm beginning to think this error has nothing to do with the way I speak

I would probably write it as Hucknall- I don't know how you pronounce it but when I said it out loud that was the picture that popped up.

funny that people still get it wrong after you spelled it though.

Here where I live everything is pronounced exactly as it is spelled. My last name resembles a name of some breed of fish (without the last letter). I recall at least one case when I was thought my last name sounds like the name of that fish.

I can kind of see where people go wrong, maybe you should make more of a pronounciation on the e and the l, though if you pronounce it nell then sounds difficult they could get neol. I have a bit of a problem with my name too, the most common spelling of my name is Bradly while I am Bradleigh, my Brother's name is Stevan but is usualy writtin as Steven by others. One of the weirdest is that people who send my dad bills for some reason keep writing his name as Bary instead of Gary.

Get the same thing, my name is
kinda hard to get when hearing it,
get alot of mail adressed to alot of
different varietys of the name :)
So used to it that if someone asks
my name i say it and immediatly follow
up with a "i`ll spell it" if on the phone
since they always ask anyway.

""Hacknell""
weird they get that wrong, i would assume
its spelled h-a-c-k-n-e-l-l if hearing it, maybe
would think Hucknell if the a isn`t clearly

Wow :) me to, my first name is very similar (actually its
the same) to a fish here, o boy how i got tormented for
that as a kid

Still remeber when it appeared, someone was reading in a book
that; "the (name of fish) eats (name of bug)"

And all heads turned towards me and i heard a sob
say .."wait a minute, do you eat (name of bug)?
haha very funny

Here in Poland there are only few names that mean exactly the same what a name of a thing.

Nadzieja (hope)
Szczęsny (obsolete for happy)
Kara (punishment)
Jagoda (berry)
Malina (raspberry)
Miła (nice)
Sława (fame)
Róża (rose)
Kalina (guelder-rose)

All of them apart from the second example are female names.

Punishment sounds like an interesting girls name, I dont think punishment is a very feminen english name though. One thing I have found out lately that my names spelling is also a girls name, by looking in on google image I get both genders, but a large majority of females. But I kind of like how my name is for either gender, makes me me not a particular gender.

But it's very rare, I never met a person with this name. There isn't also any famous woman (now nor in the past) called Kara.

And here we have this clear distinction between female and male names, the only exception is Maria which can be only a middle name of a boy - we have even such a politician, Jan Maria Rokita.

For men: Jan (Jan Kowalski is our John Smith), Andrzej (Andrew), Krzysztof (Christopher), Paweł (Paul), Piotr (Peter), Mateusz (Matthew).

For women: Maria, Anna, Katarzyna (Catherine), Magdalena (unfortunately it's also my name :( ), Agnieszka (Agnes), Karolina (Caroline).

But now there's a new trend during last several years to call babies old names. Now the most popular names for girls are Weronika and Wiktoria and Patryk for boys (but Patryk isn't an old name, in fact it was still a relatively rare name several years ago).

The most popular last names here are: Kowalski, Nowak, Malinowski, Wiśniewski.

People can spell my last name but they have difficulty understanding it when I tell them, especially over the phone. They think I'm saying Bright, White, Ryan, and a few others. It sucks having a last name that can sound like so many other words.

My last name was misspelled and mispronounced so often that I changed it. It is spelled exactly how it's pronounced, and vice versa, but no one could get it right. Everyone in my family automatically spells out the name after telling it to someone.
