Most I've found are trials and you have to end up paying. For me NO THANKS! :-) I thought I could try to put a DVD on my MP4 player. :-) (I feel wrong though in a way) but my AIM buddy says it's legal! :-) I'm not too sure!! ! Thanks WP members. :-)

I wish I could help. I bought my computer purposely because it had a DVD burner, and I bought blank DVDs, but never tried to burn anything. Sad part is....I've had it for over 2 years.

http://www.videohelp.com/ <-- this is where I get all my info, tutorials, and programs. Really great site. I've never tried ripping a DVD myself, but I'm sure there's tons of tutorials for it, and most of them tell you how to do it with different programs (both free and pay, and with links).

I'm pretty sure if you rip your legally owned DVD yourself and put it on whatever device you're putting it on, it falls under the "archival backup" law (which makes it legal).

If it is illegal to rip DVDs that you paid for and own, and put them on your iPod or other media player for your own private use, then we truly have lost our way.

Some movies and TV shows are now coming with Digital Copy, that can be used to go to a site, like iTunes, and download an electronic copy for free, once you enter in the unique code that came with your DVD. All DVDs should come with this.

Is that really how it works?

I was told by someone else that the digital copy is on a second disc, which sounds like a waste to me.

I downloaded one called Audacity...may still be out there. I did look a few months back, and you're right, the working ones have almost dissapeared. Audacity seemed to do the job. It was a link on theRegister.co.uk (I think)

IMHO The best way to rip DVDs (on Windows anyway) is using a combination of DVD Decrypter and AutoGK. You could also try Handbrake, which is equally as good as AutoGK.

Here's how I do it:
1. Download and install DVD Decrypter and AutoGK
2. Run DVD Decrypter
3. Make sure it's in IFO mode (Mode -> IFO)
4. Select your DVD drive
5. On the right-hand side, make sure the right video is selected (if it's a movie, it should automatically pick it. Just double-check that the length of the video looks about right)
6. Choose a folder to store the VOB files
7. Click Decrypt (the big button in the bottom left corner)
8. Open up AutoGK
9. For the Input file, go to the folder where you stored the VOB files, and open the first file there (probably named something like VTS_01_0).
10. Choose where you want to save the output file.
11. Select which audio track you want, and whether you want subtitles
12. Choose what size video you want (for a 90 minute movie, 700MB is good)
13. Click Start, and wait! :P

When this is done you'll have an XviD-encoded AVI file which should play on the higher-end portable media players. Some MP4 players use their own formats like AMV, in that case you'll need to then open up the XviD AVI created by AutoGK in whatever software came with your MP4 player to convert it to an AMV.

Good luck :)
