Well, I just returned from my daughter's BVR meeting, which helps her find employment after graduation this year... The rehabilitation director was asking Sammi questions such as "have you been hospitalized within the last year?", Sammi replied, "Yes, and lemme tell you it was not fun. I had a blood transplant". I just looked at her, and smiled..(She had 2 units of blood given to her after her blood count was at 5.6)..The last medical question was"have you had any body parts amputated?, to which Sammi just looks at me, not knowing what that means."You would know if you did, honey", I said to Sammi.....Then, because she is a vocational student in culinary arts and textiles services, she would do best in hotels, nursing homes,etc..She stated she ,"doesn't want to work in chicken coops, because that's a disgusting job".(she did that earlier last week as discipline, usually it's her brother's job) I just love the way she is!
We are in Ohio. where the economy is stagnant, so jobs are going to be thin for her, but it was still beneficial for her to attend, and see what her options will be...
I always get a kick out of her answers.. ![]()
it is a nice story and it is great that your so appreciative of your daughters ways and mannerisms.
only a mother can sit back and coo and ahh at their daughters simplistic answers to questions that may help others to determine what type of job she may go into.
perhaps because i am AS that i see the difficulties from this mummy approach.
i too am accused of being too much of a friend to my AS son. and not enough of a father. it is a hard balance.
just my observation, it may not be correct and it may appear offensive, and if so, i will apologise now.
i thought it may need to be pointed out, please, there is no critiscism there.

Dear Donkey, I enjoyed your response..
She is almost 19, will always be child-like with her autism and MR. I expect her to be polite, well-mannered, and to think before she speaks ( but she tells it like it is, and I admire her so much for that)... She is pure-hearted, innocent, and her responses show me the wonderful way she sees this world. I have many, many traits of AS , and understand her better than my other kids, we are birds of a feather.I truly understand what you are saying, and the balance of being both their closest companion and yet also a parent authority. Letting them know you are there for them speaks volumes, and I really enjoyed your feedback...(Also, my dream vacation would be in Ireland, I have ancestors there. You are very lucky to live there!) Peace....
