I just can't eat slower. In pretty much any activity I do, I nearly shut out the rest of the world and focus on being expedient. Eating is no exception. That's just the way I do things, not just eating. To say "eat slower" (or do anything slower for that matter) is just going against my nature.

Well, you are trying to go against your (current) nature, right?

How many times do you chew a mouthful of food before swallowing? Try 20 times, or double the number of times you currently do. That won't slow down your mouth movement, but it'll slow down your eating. If that's not enough, then triple it. Anyway, chewing each mouthful a certain number of times is an often-recommended way to eat slower. Works for me when I get into bad fast eating habits.

I find when I eat really good food, it's easier to savour it and that automatically slows me down, but if you're a college student, that may not be an option.

I recommend this book!! !

I strongly recommend it, "Shrink Yourself" by Dr. Roger Gould. It has been a huge help to me as far as compulsive overeating goes. I will always have an issue but I have gotten a handle on it for the most part after doing a lot of soul searching.

my advice;

1. plan your meals the day before- write a food journal

2. make your meals before your hungry

3. write a diary for your feelings, its best to write negative feelings down instead of eating them.

4. Include feel good things in your life such as meditation, relaxing baths.

5. and the hardest bit, do mirror work- look yourself in the eye in the mirror and say"I love you, I am good enough as I am, I do not have to wait for others aproval I can love myself now".

hope this is of some help.

Check out the 'body for life' books/website as I found them very helpful- it follows all the info that is in compulsive eating therapy.

Oddly enough I had a similar problem when not on ADHD medication my brain takes a very long time to register fullness, so I continue to eat until I am very full and then I feel sick. On my ADHD medication I my brain registers fullness very quickly. I wonder if it has to do with the ADHD...

either way I divide all my food up into single servings of fruit/vegetables/meat/grains so when I am hungry I just grab one of each bag, toss it together and eat. So just now for dinner I had 1 serving broccoli, 1 serving beef, 2 servings rice and 1 serving frozen green grapes.
