Last section - great interview. Jon Stewart, for the win.

Something that should be pointed out... just because something is popular, does not make it right. The judicial system is in place to protect individuals and minority groups when the mentality of the mob runs counter to the principles on which this nation was founded, to set aside laws passed in ignominy instead of allowing bigotry and discrimination to overwhelm.

Sounds like a reasonable argument to me.

Got a video link for those of us who didn't catch the show?

Interesting, I'm going to agree with Jon Stewart here.

My view on the subject is that first gay couples will be granted the full privileges of marriage by the national government (possibly within Obama's presidency). Give it another decade or so and such relationships will be defined as marriage. 50 years after that and we elect a homosexual president.

Such is the flow of civil rights.

Had we not redefined marriage, polygamy would still be legal.
Had we not redefined marriage, black people still couldn't marry white people.
Had we not redefined marriage, black people still couldn't marry BLACK people.

I'm sorry that the definition of a word doesn't make you feel good, but that is your problem. You don't have the right to not be offended. Moreover, gay marriage does not affect you or your marriage at all - no one would force you or your church to marry anyone you didn't want to marry. Cry more.

And that's my stance on gay marriage. I don't consider homosexuality to be the best thing in the world, but I believe that the default stance should be freedom until the case is made to restrict it. (Much like the default stance is atheism before the case is made for belief).

EDIT: To clarify, I hold nothing against homosexuals, I even walked in the gay pride parade with my girlfriend three years ago. I just happen to be personally disgusted by the notion - but I'm personally disgusted with many things that people do. Objectively, there's nothing wrong with homosexuality. Subjectively, well, we don't make laws based on subjectivity. At least we shouldn't.

It is rumored that Lincoln was gay, due to his discomfort around women and some unusually close "friendships" with other men. James Buchanan, his predecessor, never married, which at the time was extremely odd. Usually, when a man refused to marry the assumption was that he wasn't attracted to women, ie gay. FDR spent most of his time in a wheelchair, but shoved it under the carpet so well that only a handful of photos exist showing him sitting in it. FDR, by the way, had an extremely unusual relationship with his wife, Eleanor. It was the subject of endless rumors at the time by his foes, but most Americans considered it unseemly to pry, unlike today. Many historians think that Eleanor was homosexual, and that she married FDR because he was unable to perform sexually and thus allowed her to have lesbian relationships.

It wasn't until Richard Nixon that reporters discovered that digging up dirt on politicians sold ad space. When Nixon's successors proved not to be Constitution killers, the reporters moved to personal issues. Gerald Ford was incessantly called dumb, and Chevy Chase became famous portraying him that way on the original Saturday Night Live, which debuted in 1975. Every president since then has been trashed by the media. Carter was boring and clueless, Reagan was a befuddled old coot (which to some extent he was), Bush Sr. was a wimp, Clinton was a criminal sex addict who lied through his teeth about everything when he wasn't destroying the Constitution, and Bush Jr. was a moron, a war criminal, a Constitution shredder, and any number of other things. The media's infatuation with Obama may be an acknowledgement that the slime machine has collapsed under its own weight. Generation Xers will probably never vote in large numbers, having grown up in an era when everybody everywhere was corrupt to the bone according to the media.

I agree with this statement. Government has no reason to willingly give up power, and Americans are too weak to bend the gov't to their will, like, for example, the French do sometimes.
