I have no idea what it is like to take that drug, but as a chemist it is quite a complex molecle.

Like prozac it is has fluorocarbon group to improve the solubility in the fat, which should make it go into the brain with greater ease. It has several groups in the molecule, and you would need to ask someone else to understand how the drug works.

See Pan and Wang, Acta Crystallogr.,Sect.E:Struct.Rep.Online, 2006, volume E62, o768-o770. You will have to pay for a copy of the paper but the IUCr web site will give out the cif file for free. for the cif file if anyone wants to look at the molecule. You willl need to get some software which can deal with a cif. PLATON or ORTEP are free and that will do it.

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

I take Risperidone (called Risperdal where I live). My doctor prescribed it for me when I was having intensely strange and evil thoughts. It's been about three years since then, so I don't remember exactly what thoughts were going through my head at the time, but it must've been pretty bad. At any rate, they're completely gone now.

Anyway... Risperidone makes me feel really sleepy about 30 min. - 1 hr after I take it, so I take it before going to bed. It actually cured me of insomnia that way. There are also times in which I become dizzy. I've put on quite a few pounds, though that is also in part due to poor diet and other medications I'm on. There is also a very strange side effect in that, if you are on it for at least several months, you may begin to lactate. Yes, even if you're a guy. It's because Risperidone increases prolactin in the brain by inhibiting dopamine.

Risperidone is in a class of medicines called an "atypical antipsychotic". Are you sure that you have schizophrenia?

Risperidone blocks some of the functions of the brain that use the neurotransmitter called "dopamine". The theory behind this blocking of dopamine is said that it may suppress some of the symptoms of schizophrenia.

Side-effects can include sedation / low energy, apathy, trouble concentrating. There are other therapies that can go along with medicine but these therapies do not rely soley on medicine and the sufferer of these symptoms can work on reducing medicine or reducing the symptoms themselves:

A long time ago I had taken Risperdal for about 5 months. I was supposed to take it before bed, cause it made me sleepy. I don't recall any problems I had with it. It made me calmer, and helped control anger. Suppressed a lot of homicidal thoughts.

I take risperidone, called Risperdal in the US. I was put on it after 9-11 because I had a psychotic break. When I went off it, I got jumpy and had to wander all over, and when I went back on it I wandered less, so Risperdal helps with the urge to wander. I did gain weight on it, that's a side effect. Didn't lactate though. Risperdal is commonly given to autistics, it's supposed to make us less agitated and angry. It does work, but take it before bed, and you will likely gain weight if you're eating poorly (ie lots of junk food).
