Every time I go Somewhere I can't help but look at my surroundings but as I look around I see people put the scarriest Smile on their face when your eyes make contact with theirs..... From across the room or 10 feet away. I'm curious on your Ideas... Or if I'm odd and it only happens to me. :) .

Strangers smile at each other like that all the time. To me it doesn't really make much sense and I want to scream "WHAT ARE YOU SMILING AT?!?!" It's a social acknowledgement thing, i think. I think it says "I am acknowledging you and respecting you." Much like a nod of the head toward someone. It's odd because a smile's primary purpose is to communicate happiness . . . but certainly everyone cannot be happy about seeing strangers.

Ah, ****.

I'm one of the smiliers.

Never really thought about it before but it doesn't make much sense. I'll continue doing it though because, like lowfreq said, its a way to acknowledge someone's humanity ie their importance to me.

I think only Americans do it. In french class I think they said in France they're smart and don't smile every time an eyeball turns in their direction.

I'm not sure why. I used to get smiled at by random people more often when I was a kid, though.

I smile to reassure people that I don't mean them any harm. If I walk around looking sullen then some people tend to be a little scared of me, and people are more likely to pick fights with you.

It's a defensive thing to appease people.

People don't smile at me. People don't smile at rabid animals dressed up like people. Especially when those rabid animals also drive a station wagon.
