AS and Proud! Symbols topic

I love symbols!! ! These are the only condensed ideas I can understand. The visuality makes them so beautiful, I cannot choose just one. They are all keepers. Worth thousands of words.

I say use them all. Maybe create some sort of quilt incorporating all these images. Where is NocturnalQuilter?

the only limit to all these great ideas is the imagination, and those of us on ?The Spectrum never lack in this area.

I am especially fond of "Proud Member of the Autistic Spectrum!! !"

Thanks to all who contributed. :D

Logo design is a tricky thing, and there are lots of "rules" about what a good logo should or should not have.

I quite like the simplicity of the infinity sign. It's very easy to get into "first idea" thinking and go for the spectrum = rainbow and get stuck there.

I'll have a think about it and add my ideas to the pile if I come up with something I like.

Rainbows and variations thereof have generally struck me as a cop-out when it comes to color design. Can't decide what color to use? Just slap 'em all on there...
Visually, they can be very noisy when applied to large areas, and they're costly to print in high-quality applications (silkscreened shirts, posters, business cards, and the like).

That doesn't mean using that sort of color palette is always bad (I happen to the Autistic Pride infinity loop above is a pretty good design, as is the boomerang flower underneath it). You just have to be very thoughtful of how you apply the colors.

I'm a graphic designer, and I specialise in branding and logo design. I spend my life looking at hideously bad logos that are the result of someone liking some colour or thinking something looks nice.

I prefer the boomerang flower because

a. It would still work in monchrome
b. It's very simple - a child could draw it from memory
c. The colours are solid - no dithering

Yeah, I've been so against that effin puzzle piece issue since I first saw it. I've been trying to come up with something for a while, but nothing simple enough to be a true 'logo'. I keep wanting to work with hearts b/c I want to educate the masses that hey, autistics have FEELINGS, and should be handled with LOVE and UNDERSTANDING. "All we need is LOVE" ie stop torturing your kid, you're not going to CURE them, LOVE them for who they are..! Anyway, I digress... mine won't work as a logo, but feel free to use them if you like!

How does this look? I was going to write my thoughts behind it, but I'd rather hear what other people make of it.

The Aspire program is a type of federally funded back to school/work thing. Thats the first thing that came to mind when I saw this.

I really do like the pinwheel image or the infinity symbol. I know the GLBT community uses the rainbow, but I think in the context of the different symbol it wouldn't be an issue. I like rainbow colors too. :D

Hmm, strange grey area. There's plenty of companies with aspire as their name, however we're not talking about starting up a company, more about getting an image to use online as an awareness raiser for aspergers.

Strange? You are already arguing against your own suggested image?

What connection is there between the word "aspire" and the word "Asperger's"?

I can see that you have employed a fractionally different hue for the "r", along with half of the double blob thing (whose outline might be taken as an infinity symbol). Unfortunately, that leaves the word "aspie", which is not much used outside the community, with a sideways tear-drop?

And finally, using English is not the best way to go about getting international awareness and the thread title does specify "Symbol".

Of course I'll argue against my own work. I always strive to do the best work, and first ideas are generally the ones you throw away, but they're necessary to get to the right idea. A good designer tries to separate himself from ego, some designs just don't fit, and you can't get all precious about it.

My original ideas for aspire was to use the name aspie. I'm pretty new to the idea of an autistic community, so I don't know how common different phrases are. A week ago I'd never heard of neuro typical, aspie, aspergian, and so on.

The infinity symbology was intentional. My idea was to create a clean, concise image that called on people with autism to aspire to be the best they can be, and the infinity symbol, as well as depicting the wide spectrum of individuals who all describe and experience autism differently, suggests that we can be anything we want to be, once we set our minds to it.

But, back to the drawing board. I never want people to just politely tell me my work is good. I know that I'm a good designer, but I don't always hit on the right idea first time, or even second or third. I always invite people to be as blunt and honest about my work as I am about other people's. It's the only way you can improve your skills.

A hand sign additionally? I think the the extended 2nd and 4th digits would be good, since it would show a biomarker for the autism spectrum.

Problem is we don't know if testosterone has anything to do with autism so we can't really use a hand sign.

I like this. The "aspire" logo is also pretty good.

This logo can't use rainbows. It may be a spectrum, but I don't believe it needs such a literal metaphor, not to mention it's already essentially "taken" by logos pertaining to gay/bi sexuality groups. No offence intended.
