Has anyone ever been told this or asked this?

I have by another aspie and it just sounds funny because it sounds like I'm sick instead or I have some kind of disease.

It's like saying "I have the flu" or "I have the cold" so saying "I have the Aspergers" or telling someone they have the Aspergers sounds funny because it sounds like it's a sickness instead of a neurological condition.

It's no different than saying, you have MS (insert whatever neurological condition you want here).

"The" is superfluous when used in medical terminology.

Some people talk about having "the" cancer, as well.

It was mentioned in Forrest Gump (it's how Forrest's mom died).

Similar to how people with Lyme Disease will call it Lymes and say they have "The Lymes". Just shows they are ignorant having a medical condition and not even knowing the correct name for it.

In the South some people joke and call Alzheimers "Oldtimers" disease. Yet I've overheard older people in the South who seriously think the correct medical term is Oldtimers.

Just like some people in the South still have portraits of Jefferson Davis hanging on their walls.

The name "Asperger's" sounds like a sickness with or without the "the", at least in my opinion. Hell, when I tell people I have it, I don't even use the name, it sounds made up in my opinion. cough"Ass-Burgers."cough

It's true some people in the south do call it Oldtimers... sigh. In fact there is a 70something year-old man I work with who calls it that. It's not unusual to hear him say something like, "I may be older than dirt, but at least I don't have oldtimers!"

But hey, not ALL southerners are that bad! Dimebag Darrell is from Arlington, TX. While part of a huge metropolis, it's still part of the south and believe it or not, the DFW area has some of the most inbred hillbillies I've ever encountered, even compared to my small area of the south.

I agree about Asperger's sounding like "ass burgers" and that is one of the reasons I don't mention it to people.

This is funny because I keep picturing it as something nasty or abnormal..I don't know why but I still haven't gotten use to the word. This is part of the reason why I have trouble telling people.

Most people react like WTF?.....whenever I mention it like it some kind of new epidemic or some physical handicap. Not many people really know about aspergers in these here parts. It gets frustrating when I have to try and elaborate on what it is other than being under the autistic spectrum.
