LONDON -- A British newspaper is reporting that a 13-year-old boy has become one of the country's youngest fathers. The mother is reportedly 15.

The front page of The Sun shows a picture of a baby-faced boy holding the hand of a newborn girl.

Britain has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Europe and Friday's report sparked a debate over the issue.

The most recent government figures show that about 39,000 girls under age 18 became pregnant in 2006. More than 7,000 of those girls were younger than 16.

The BBC's flagship morning radio show aired a segment about the story and call-in programs were devoted to the issue.

Fortunately, there is still such a thing as writing a strongly-worded letter to the editor of the London Times to put an end to such delinquent acts.

I wonder what is it about Britian that has a lot of teen pregnancies, lack of education?
Even countries like the US where teen pregnancies are common, they are showing a decline.

no way, the teens in the US wait until they are at least 14 or 15

True indeed, I think we had a discussion on that some time ago, someone (slowmutant I think) kept denying the story thinking it was fake.

That is disgusting.

A child inside a child - it is horrendous.

Oh this doesn't shock me. There were kids in my school who were having babies when they were 14 and 15. That's not far from 13. I have seen a woman who was 23 and she said she had a 10 year old.

A boy in my class got someone pregnant last year (the guy was 13 at the time). I think the girl had an abortion or something, I dunno, nobody ever tells me the full story behind stuff.

The sick thing about this, is he was 12 at the time, didn't know jack s**t about sex, and looks like he's 8. The girl was 15! That's just sick. Plus the parents really didn't seem to care.

From their point of view, its only a small age gap. 2, 3 years. From what I've read of the case, the boy seems very willing to do the best he can to care for the child.. which is more than a lot of older people do.

Wrong it may be, but its happened, and theres not a lot can be done about it. With decent help and support, hopefully all three will be ok. And hopefully learn some seriously important things about the nature of procreation.

Yes, but it seems much more common in the UK. Seems like parents don't mind much either.

This isn't news. There was a twelve-year-old in an old neighborhood of mine that got pregnant.
