I used to think this, all the way until I graduated from high school. I am a night person, to such an extent that when I had to take really important tests (like the national ones), my Mom would let me stay home until after the test was over and she would write out a note saying I had been sick. That way, I could take the tests as make-up in the afternoons, after school was over. Had I been forced to take those tests when they were originally scheduled, I would have scored far lower than I scored by taking them in the afternoon.
I said I'm a night person and this is true because by nature I am and always have been. However, there was something else that was going on too: both of my parents were alcoholics and sometimes it wasn't safe for me to go to sleep until dawn because I had to protect not only me, but my little sister and (sometimes) my Mom, if it was my Dad who was out of control that night. Once the sky started to lighten outside, both of my parents would have passed out, and I knew that everybody was in no further danger--that day, anyway. So even if I hadn't been a night person, I would only have had maybe an hour of sleep on those nights anyway, so the result would have been the same. After I became an adult I read that children of alcoholics (like Suzanne Somers, the actress) often don't sleep at night because of the same reasons, and so they usually have serious problems with normal school schedules because they never get enough sleep to achieve their academic potentials.
I don't know if it's still true or not, but I read that at one time the public school system in Las Vegas, in some schools, had "regular" night classes for the kids of people who worked in the round-the-clock casinos, etc. So at least at that time, kids could go to a "normal" school at their "normal" hours: at night!
