Here's a different facial expression test that I don't think that I've seen on here before. http://www.wwnorton.com/college/psych/psychsci2/content/activities/ch10a.asp

I've taken the other ones so many times that I actually score in the normal range now, so I thought a different one would be nice. The only thing is is that it doesn't tell you what is in the "normal" range, just the percentage that you got right. I got a percentage of 54% right missing about as many as I got right, except in the fear category. I got almost all of those wrong. Let's see how everyone else does!

Towards the end I thought they got a lot harder. They had the same person back to back making (from what I could tell) almost the same facial expression. I kept wondering if they were the same expression, and they were trying to trick me into giving two different answers.

54% - There were a lot of them that I wasn't sure fit the choices they gave you to make, but was able to get the answer (often) by the process of elimination....

I went to the website mentioned at the bottom of the article and took their test and did much better. In the original test there was one girl (dark hair, glasses) who I just could not read at all. I think the glasses threw me.

RESULTS:

You correctly identified 54 % of the expressions. For each emotion expressed, your score is as follows:

Joy: you correcly identified 3 of 4
Fear: you correcly identified 0 of 4
Disgust: you correcly identified 3 of 4
Surprise: you correcly identified 3 of 4
Anger: you correcly identified of 2 4
Sadness: you correcly identified 3 of 4
Contempt: you correcly identified 1 of 4

Interesting that the emotion I can identify the easiest subconciously is the one I couldn't get any right with. Like an animal, I can sense fear in another person... I tend to exploit it when I have a reason to, as most people will show a slight sign of fear for a brief second when they are doing anything that can trigger it, such as having an argument, they will show signs of fear when they hear something they don't like. But then again, it is not facial expressions I use to identify fear.

disgust, surprise and joy were the easiest for me, but I'm not really happy with this score. I should've gotten better.

Three of them seemed pretty easy (two of the "joy" ones); for the other 25, it was pretty much guesswork.

It was anger and I thought: Disgust
It was disgust and I thought: Anger so I guess those were switched around...

It was fear and I thought: Surprise

39%

Most of them looked pretty angry/contempt to me.

Perhaps if I'd been in a better mood I could have identified the expressions better. When I'm happier perhaps I'm more open to interpreting people's facial expressions.

I found that test quite hard and a little intimidating.

I tend to do better with more stylised/exaggerated expressions.
This test I feel was quite close to my performance in real life.
