Like a few others I've experienced a very slow and unresponsive WP web site periodically over the past few weeks. I've see the notices about unusually high activity but I'm here at all hours and the problem really doesn't seem to be related to overall site traffic. Sometimes the site is so slow that I can't even read a post let alone respond to a post.
The Mods and the site originator don't seem too concerned with this lack of performance so maybe this is somthing that is usual that I just haven't been around long enough to experience. If that is so then I apologize for being such a dips**t.
If this is not so then why isn't anybody telling us what is going on and what they are going to do about it. Maybe the old horse just needs to be put down if she can't live up to her expectations.

Yes, I wonder what's going on.

yes it seems like it,it seems like its getting worse-not better.

have read in threads on the WP discussion board before that it's to do with WP being based on very old code, and it all needs updating.
think Alex is very busy-as it's supposed to be a big job,and the mods can't do anything with the site.
--and in the process of posting this, got the white page error again.

It doesn't seem to have any relationship to visitor numbers or time of day.

Slight aside..I think the delays might be fanning the fires of some of the more contentious debates..."bystanders" can't be bothered, and the invested parties have a raised level of grrrr because they have more time to be angered by the last thing that caused annoyance...and dont have the time to revise their posts in "preview"

Which someone else has probably already noted by now :)
I may have to get a life at this rate. 8O

Seems like this for me too. Maybe someone don't like certain topics on the Politics, Philosophy, and Religion section? I just posted a vid there :D

I am familiar with bandwidth 'throttling' but this is pretty bad even for a mom and pop operation. I visited Alex's homepage and it looks like he could afford to run a first class site but maybe it's pretty obvious that he's not that involved here anymore. Maybe he should turn it over to the members. I did that with one of my forums and it was a big help.

...it is definitely getting worse, both more frequent, longer lag, and even "page back" ( to save a post ) doesn't always work.

Interesting point about the impact on threads. I thought that too, that there is increased frustration, less participation in discussions unless really invested in it. It may also be putting people off even bothering to try and look at threads which they are not already involved in or that don't have a seriously interesting title.

I´ve been terribly frustrated with the slowness lately. I wasted several evenings writing long and well thought out posts, only to have them get "lost" because the sight was down. Had a few meltdowns over this. Took a short break from WP. Came back, but lately I´ve usually had time to read a few things, write one post, and then the sight goes down! So I´ve been much less active on WP these days. I took it as a sign that I´ve been too obsessive here- (and have been, I can spend hours on this sight and it feels like 5 minutes). I´ve been ordering more books again and reading them, so I have a way to keep up with my interests. But I´m quickly running out of books (and money). It´s like I have an addictive habit, either Wrong Planet or books...sigh. I guess I need to get a life...

It's slow a lot of the time.

Anyone who was here in mid-late-2006 will remember the error messages that occurred nightly, around midnight (U.S. Central time).

If this is followed by a WP pledge drive then I'll know we have been set up. :?

agrees, that would be a good idea, though think would have more chance of getting a member onboard to help, rather than take over altogether.
There are some users here who seem highly knowledgeable of WPs coding.

I can understand wp getting slow when there are a lot of people using it, but sometimes it goes very slow for no apparent reason. Over the last few hours it has ground to a halt several times, and frankly there isn't a lot of posting going on at the moment.

There are times I wanted to reply to someone's post but it has taken so long to get the reply box open I've given up and either gone to another website or shutdown the computer.
