Yes, I have all 5 seasons on dvd and I must say that it is one of the best series I ever watched. Especially season 4 is so heartbreaking. But BBC starts with season 1 I assume. It's not an easy show (a lot of characters and a slow-telling story) but the story behind is realistic (I think) and moving.

There are tons of rabid fans of The Wire who insist its the greatest TV show ever - most shows have a few people that think that, but The Wire has legions of them. Personally, I don't go that far but it IS a great show - really shows what life is really like in an American city (Baltimore) not just for cops, but for the other groups that society has largely forgotten, and does a great job exploring interactions / causes & effects between various aspects of society. All seasons focus on the cops & one other group:

Season 1: The drug dealers
Season 2: The dock workers
Season 3: The drug dealers again, and the politicians
Season 4: Inner city youth and the school system
Season 5: Journalists at a newspaper

I highly recommend it.

I guess I am one of the legion. This is the best tv show ever.

Best TV show of the Decade
What first seemed a simple HBO cop show was anything but simple. Ex-newspaperman David Simon built this series into a to-scale replica of the city of Baltimore, from the streets to City Hall to the docks to the schools to the newsrooms. No series has ever been so granular: zoom in on one area and you get the detailed struggles of a junkie, zoom in on another and see the whirrings of the political machine through a watchmaker's lens. On top of that it had pitch-perfect dialogue, elegantly plotted crime stories and a tone that ranged from elegiac to raunchily funny. This pissed-off love poem on the life and death of American cities was as good as TV ever gets.

[I]The Wire, which has just begun its fourth season on HBO, is surely the best TV show ever broadcast in America. This claim isn't based on my having seen all the possible rivals for the title, but on the premise that no other program has ever done anything remotely like what this one does, namely to portray the social, political, and economic life of an American city with the scope, observational precision, and moral vision of great literature.[/]

I too am one of the legion as this show is the very best. There is nothing close to it currently (although Breaking Bad is fast approaching it if it continues to be as consistent as it is). The writing is unmatched and the characters are so real, so unique that almost everyone of the tens of main characters are recognisable and name-able after you've finished watching the show. It is truly an absolute masterpiece that is almost unrivalled.

While I don't think that The Wire is the greatest thing to ever grace the screen of television (I actually don't watch ANY television (and The Dekalog was the best thing ever made for television)), I am currently addicted to the fourth series. The thing I have a problem with is that every time I see Aiden Gillen I can't help thinking of him licking arse in Queer as Folk :|

Last TV show I really watched.

It was good, but they should have capped it at season 4. Season 5 was an anti climax.

I loved Snoop and Omar on that show. I've watched the whole thing twice.

I've just started watching it. I've heard a bunch of good things about the series.
