It's nice to have a place to communicate with others who understand you. Although I have quite a few friends, I know that they often get annoyed with me.
My son was diagnosed with aspergers 7 years ago by the leading specialist in Australia. At the time he asked me if I had it, to which I replied,of course not! He suggested I read a book, which I thought would help answer questions about my son. The book, in fact, was about a mother who realised she had aspergers after her child was diagnosed. OK, I got the message!
Then I thought back to the way I was as a kid:

Thought I was an alien at 15 years (well I always felt different).
Wrote in mirror writing (unfortunately the teachers refused to mark my work).
Took on the personalities of others (real and from books) including their accents and mannerisms. In my defense, it made me feel more socially acceptable :)
Anyway, I could keep going on, but the result is, I realised I am an aspie (and I don't mind it, if only others would let me be!).

Nice to know you :)

Welcome, Michy! Hang on, I'm new too. Welcome, me!

Indeed, Asperger's can make one feel alienated - I have only just got over this myself. That's what this is here for, I assume.

Hello and welcome :) I am also a parent and my child has a severe form of autism. I suspect Aspergers in myself, or at least autistic traits. It seems to be quite common for a family member to also be somewhere on the spectrum.

P.S. I also took on the personalities of people from TV and books.

Hi Michy and welcome to the WP. I am diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and I enjoy having it. It has brought me a lot of joy in life---and a few challenges with parenting and being a good husband.

I am a teacher too. I teach the gifted.

Enjoy the WP.

Same here glider, but replace 'husband' with 'boyfriend' :)

Welcome to wrong planet..

I have in the past, 'mirrored' other people as well as a means to blend in within a world dominated by Neurotypicals.

I understand it now, as how I used it... as a modification of when an Autistic uses scripts to communicate and Echolalia to repeat words or phrases.... instead of verbalising what I heard and re-saying it again, I mimic behaviors and used them as scripts and such and re-did behaviors in similar settings as I first learned them in...

So along with runnnig scripts, as using stocked phrases, I also ran a script in stock behavior reactions.... I had an inability to be proactive and to be active and take the initiative... had to have something to react to, so that I could initiate a script, with stocked words and phrases and behaviors I recently adapted into memory...

Last few years I have been my own psychologist and have been learning alot about myself in altering these behaviors to become more proactive and less reactive... change from using scripts as communicating to learning to communicate without scripts.... It will always be there but I am approaching a balance of the two... best of both worlds I suppose...
