This is really going to piss you guys off. The new gen of HD (solid state) not only do not need defragging but this shortens their lifespan :lol: :twisted:

You are thinking of flash memory. Like in thumb drives. True solid state drives dont use that. But you are right about not needing defrag.

I'd just as soon not use defrag, but if i have to, I want to watch it work!

Anyway, I am thinking of a DRAM drive! HAH-HAH!

Well, you could install '98 on virtual box and defrag the virtual drive

I cant remember why they got rid of it. My friend that works for MS (yeah, sometimes linux freaks go the OTHER way), told me why.

Though it is unnecessary on solid state devices, I cannot see how its harmful.

I loved watching defrag run. I loved how when I installed drivers, the whole process would speed up almost 2x the speed. I don't mind the XP version. I can live with that, but the one in Vista.... You haven't a clue.

Memories of watching it just send data to the end of the drive so it can contiguously flow with data until it hit something like the swap file, then it would just go around it and carry on.

The only way a drive could be damaged was if it were old and the heat build up was so great there was no vent for letting the heat go, so the bearings wear out.

BRING BACK VISUAL DEFRAG!!.
Do Microsoft think no-one watches it or is even remotely interested in seeing it work?

I actually found the cluster-by-cluster visual defrag to be very useful, especially with floppy disks that had bad sectors.

Yes...defragasm. It's like I can't get enough. I just never wanted to say it, but you all did first.

Just curious, by WHY isn't there a JKDefrag screensaver? The only dilemma: the defrag process would be of no avail; if it's merely for entertainment the impact isn't quite the same. I have Vista.
