In Ubuntu, I've had great success with Virtualbox OSE. It's free, and it's in the repos. Just go to Synaptic and add it.

A friend of mine has had some trouble using VMWare Server, which allegedly is better than VMWare Workstation. I have no personal experience with it, though.

You could always try the trial version first.

I know what you mean. I am trying to get VMWare running in WINE, so that I can run windows xp, so that I can try out cygwin.

Its a bit of a struggle.

I can't seem to get Windows98 running in my VirtualBox, it installs, but I have trouble when trying to install the drivers from the image for it. Nothing happens. I use Vista, but some programs don't like XP or Vista to run on. I might try installing on one of my Linux Dstro's at some point. But I need Windows 98 at some point

Win9x aren't officially supported by VirtualBox, so the accelerated drivers won't work. You could still use the normal drivers though. There're more info on their forum.

Isn't there a Linux version of VMware Workstation?

Virtualbox really only works well for Windows 2000 and later, or for Linux distros, BSD etc. For older versions of Windows (if you really must use them), try Microsoft Virtual PC.

My next step is to use VirtualBox for Linux anyway. I downloaded different versions anyway. But Windows98 is one I need because some games I have will NOT work on Windows XP no matter what I try, compatibility, single core, re-install, etc. I even tried it under Wine. Installs, but doesn't run, now I can't uninstall it. Ahhh, well..

I've used VMWare, it seemed pretty good, but I was using a 32bit computer with the most powerful processor available on that type of board

Of course. But follow the logic past that. Why would I use wine to ultimately run xp? And the point of cygwin is so that you can do linux-like things in windows.

Its called a shaggy dog story.(A mercifully short one)

Maybe my sense of humour is just dumb!

Wine is not an emulator. It's just a program that allows the use of Windows executables to run on the Linux platform. Like a translator.

:) Who said it was? You are correct though. It is a compatibility layer. GNU know what you are talking about. :P

Sorry, I didn't realize that was a joke. I was really thinking that you wanted to check out cygwin without using Windows as the main OS.
