Username Change?

Is there any way I can change my username without creating a new account? I want to change my username to reflect who I am now, as my current one is something that I no longer am.

You may only have one account. If you open another, both will be banned.

I can see no reason to change your username.

Actually, it is entirely possible to have my username changed. I know how to do it, I just don't have the access privlages to do it myself. If someone who has the access privilages to do this would like to assist me with it, it would be appreciated.

EDIT: Also, I could exploit a flaw in the system WP uses to do it, but I don't know enough about the system to do that, plus it would be unethical, and I don't want to be doing something I shouldn't be.

Yes, it is possible. But WP policy forbids it.

So you could do it, except you can't, and even if you could you wouldn't.

What is the "this" you are referring to?

I would hazard a guess that WP is, to an extent, an obsession of mine. I rather like it, and I believe it is as successful as it is, because of a (maybe fortuitous) choice of rules.

Some of the rules, I don't necessarily fully agree with, but I will still enforce them, as they seem to work.

In particular, the rule that states that you may only have one account (unless you obtain the permission of the owners of WP), happens to be one I find many reasons to agree with.

One reason is that I find deception to be particularly unpalatable. Attempting to use a second account is either deceitful or shows that the user has not read the rules.

Not allowing changes to a member's username is just a policy - but again, one that works. I support it because it avoids confusion, and avoids destroying the threads where a user has been quoted or otherwise referred to.

Occasionally, there are flurries of people that decide that they can change their username by opening a new account, and insisting that they no longer want to use the old account. When they make a public show of this disregard for the rules, I find it helps to make it clear that it is not acceptable.

Sadly, I want to do this in the rules, and distance myself from the old online identity I once used. Even if all else fails for what I would like to do, I do have one last option, but I shall avoid it for now, at least until I am at a point where I can safely carry it out without risk of any repercussion.sadly by then I probably won't care, and probably won't be using WP. However, I am open to whatever conditions could be put on a special excaption for a change, and if you are a mod and care to know why, please pm me, as I am not posting it publicly.

Both banned. Then why isn't this account (the one I'm posting with) banned?

I still think it's pretty damn unfair that the only way to change one's name is to creat a new account and not reveal that you had a different name.

I've pretty much stopped coming here, but I felt like reading this section of WrongPlanet today.

MR, please try pm'ing sinsbodly or lau. Some admin changes have been made and perhaps something better can be worked out for you now.

It seems lau has spoken in this thread and I recall sinsboldly commenting in Mr's thread. Lau gives some decent reasons, but I do question the one about the threads getting messed up, since I have seen a name change done and this did not happen. I have always assumed it was because if they do one then they have to allow others, although some may have better reasons than others. I still would not mind dropping my threes, by the way...

I would not know much about that but thought there might be some name changing going on through pm requests for people who have a really good reason. The one public request I saw granted was a for a good reason, but not nearly as good as MR's in my opinion. Mine is not a good reason.
