To those out there with social phobia, or if you feel rather self conscious: Are there certain people who provoke even more of this uncomfortable feeling as compared to others?

It could be that you are more conscious around people your own age, or possibly people you know. For me it's certainly that way. I'm just wondering how others go through the same thing.

Sometimes I wonder why I get so worked up about being around others, and other times I really don't care. Does this depend on me? Or is the variable other people?

So are you more self conscious around certain people? And what specifics about them do you feel allows this to happen?

^^ Yaye, I believe this is certainly the case for me with certain humans. I believe I am rather often more scared with humans of a similar age to myself, as I perhaps expect them to rather suddenly speak to me, which is veyr nice of them I believe, however I am very scared. On the other hand, I believe that I perhaps become even more frightened of every individual that I know not as of late.^^ Also, I believe I felt not scared a very large amount during my driving lessons as this was a very controlled environment.

Yes, I find that I am most self-conscious around people that I have seen or met before, but who I am not friends with. This is because I don't know how to act: as if they're a stranger, or as if we're friends. I have trouble figuring out what is in between.

Also, I feel more self-conscious around people my age, or a few years older (probably 14-20?), than I do around older adults and younger kids.

The best thing to do around people when you dont know how to act is to just not say anything. keep your mouth shut.

My dad told me that the thing that gets you in the most trouble in life is your mouth, not what you pshysically do.

This is how rapist and serial killers get away all the time, they know how to keep their mouths shut and the ones who dont always get caught. (you know, the ones who brag) lol.

Your mouth is trouble, remember that. Just dont say anything. People are more intimidated by a quiet person than a loud person, because they dont know what to expect.

Also, they wont be able to find anything to make fun of you about because you havent said anything to them, accept the fact that you are quiet, but they dont do that.

If someone does say a stupid joke. Stare them down like you are going to kill them, or tell them straight up.
"Dont f**k with me man/girl"....then if thats the only words they heard from you, thats all they'll remember, and thats some pretty scary s**t to remember.

keep your mouth shut, because if you say..."I'm a shy person, I have asperger's, i am nopt good at social skills" that person may seem cool but he may tell a person who is not cool, or you'll get more comfortable telling just anyone who smiles.
Then that leads to rumors and so forth and they find something to pick on you about.

So just shut your mouth

I seem to get self-concious around people my own age. Maybe its the desire to fit in. I also get self-concious around hot girls.

I guess theres a trend of being very conscious of ones self around girls and peers. I'm the same.

Any other factors possibly? I wonder if race and ethnicity or even culture could be associated with ones feelings of self consciousness?

I don't have social phobia. However i have noticed that beyond the generalized groups, there are times when a certain individual will make me extremely nervous. They can cause me to completely loose the power of speech. I think it has to do with how the person carries their energy. It's similar to the reason for gaze avoidance--wanting to avoid the feeling of extreme discomfort in sharing such an intimate connection with someone. There are some people that a connection happens without eye contact. It's disturbing. Especially when the other person doesn't have a clue as to what is going on.

I'm incredibly tense around my family. Nobody else bothers me though... just my immediate family.

For some reason it's not a group of people eg peers, opposite sex, that make me self concious. It's just certain individuals I know that can make me feel very tense and awkward. So in a group of people there's always one that makes me self concious, so if it was just me and them the conversation would be prettty uncomfortable.

I'm self conscious especially around girls I think are cute or that I like and it makes it difficult a lot of times. I might get shy with a girl I REALLY like but if I want to try I'll at least try to start a conversation or something...

lol
