People have always commented on the way I walk... namely the fact that when I walk, I keep my eyes fixed on the ground... I think it's for balance because I feel like I'll stumble and trip and lose my balance if I don't look down.

I remember I used to get commets off people in school asking me why I always look at the ground and why I can't just look ahead.

After being diagnosed, I guess it's to do with Dyspraxia/AS

so I wondered if anyone can relate?

I do that too, it's why I could never be a catwalk model, LOL.

I definitely can relate, turbo! I find it's a balance thing and my general shyness towards people who I don't know... When I take walks in public I will usually look down, occasionally looking up.

I do it all the time, when I am walking to the bus stop I always have my eyes on the ground. I am not certain as to why I do this, I just do.

Yes, I do this too. When walking, I typically look down. Or, if I am afraid that I will collide with people, I will look up. It is not so much for my balance as my shyness.

Yeah, I guess it's both to keep focus on the direction and (mainly in my case) to avoid even distant eye contact, people in general.

wow interesting responses already.
yea, I think it's also the case with me to do with eye contact too... I know that if I look up and see someone looking at me I quickly look down again.

And I say it's OK not to look people in the eyes. I've always done that without reasoning, when I realised my beaviour was odd I tried to make eye contact but it just doesn't work, it just shows the deep difference between you and the person you are looking, you feel uncomfortable and they don't like what they see.

I look at the ground maily because it's safe. No chance of accidently looking at a person. In addition its nice not to trip over things or not notice a step.

I do this. I think it is to do with avoiding eye contact in my case. I also used to hunch my shoulders and have my head down, so I was almost curled in on myself. I had to make a conscious effort to straighten up, but my eyes generally remain downcast when I'm walking. Maybe I will try to keep my eyes up off the floor and see what happens.

I have a thing about not treading on insects too, so it helps me not squash ants and what not in the summer.

In my case I think it has to do with avoiding eye contact too.

I noticed that I would look down when I walk and everyone else looked straight ahead when I was 16-17. I then made a conscious effort to look forward but it was quite difficult as I would lose balance and walk over things, plus originally I discovered sunlight was very bright and I needed to stop looking up after a minute when my eyes were all waterey :P (this could be to do with the fact I live relatively close to that hole in the ozone layer, I assume in northern hemisphere land this problem wouldn't be as bad)

Now I find I am fine looking forward with lots of practise when I am by myself, but I find old habits sneaking in when other people are walking towards me. It's still an issue I need to address.

I used to do this when I was younger. A combination of being a bit unsteady on my feet and self-consciousness.

I'm still a bit more unsteady than most people, but not as self-conscious. I look straight ahead now and keep my head down now and again. Funny enough I think keeping my head up has done my coordination wonders, even though I used to think watching the ground was a better idea.

When I was younger I didn't just look down, my head was basicly bent down and I was leaning forawrd. But now my eyes are just on the ground, mostly because of self contiousness and also balance.
