Could you hear your neighbour a flat above or below cough?

I seriously don't know why flats are made so thinly - they cram everyone on top of each other with barely a partition separating them. I mean, not that coughing is incredibly irritating - it's not constant, but if I can hear him coughing what can he hear me doing? Is there such a thing as privacy in this world? When he greets me does he somehow know I was masturbating the night before?

Just random thoughts.

I can only hear my neighbors music below me because of the bass and I am very sensitive to bass. I can also hear the music next door when he plays it loud enough and his loud TV when I am in the bathroom but not so much when I am not in there.

I also realized recently that I bet no matter how low my neighbor plays his music, I will still hear it because of the bass and he likes bass. My husband doesn't want me complaining to our landlord because he thinks it will cause too much trouble and we be kicked out. Back when his brother still lived with that neighbor, I have heard them fight a few times.

I can hear pretty much everything in the hallway but not in my own apartment. I can hear doors open out there and people talking or going up and down the stairs and the neighbor's kids. They like to scream as they go outside but thank goodness they don't do it often nor do they stay in the hall.

Back before the neiohbors moved in below me, there lived a lady and her teenage son. I would sometimes hear her have sex because the bed would hit the wall. My husband would hear her scream but I never did. I also heard her music because she played it a little loud but it never bothered me because there was no bass.

<----- Can hear the vacuuming next door. Can also hear cabinets opening and closing. Can also hear water running through the pipes. If she's masterbating she's as quiet as a church mouse.

I can hear my neighbor next door coughing as clearly as he was in my kitchen. It often happens in the night. He should quit smoking, I think.

The water pipes are also rather annoying. When the tap is turned on in the apartment above (the only one) I hear a hissing noise so loud that it almost surpasses every other outside noise.

I can tell next door when my neighbor takes a shower. Whenever he uses it, it makes this annoying sound when it turns on and turns off. It's been months since I last heard it so either it got fixed or he just rarely showers. Ewwww.

I mostly can't hear my neighbor where I live now but in my other place I heard almost everything. I could hear them doing things like coughing, sneezing, having sex, and arguing.

Oh yeah, with regards to plumbing in general: it can be ridiculous. Once I lived in a shared flat that somehow made a sound so loud you'd think a cruise liner was sinking (it's a bass kind of sound too, right?)

I used to live in a basement apartment when I lived in Calgary and my upstairs neighbours would always be fighting. One time I heard them fighting about porn. The woman was screaming at the man about how all he ever does is look up porn on the computer and all she does is work and she was getting sick of it. It was actually quite entertaining.

I've had neighbors that fought really bad. The worst ones would fight all night long until the cops came and took one of them away. They would yell and swear and smash stuff. Once they even managed to smash a hole in an old computer monitor. The landlord told us that they punched holes in the walls too. They sounded like they were killing each other.

When I have lived in apartments in the past, yes, I could hear people cough. And a lot more I wish I never had heard!

Sincerely,
Matthew

We very seldom hear any noise from the neighbors' apartments here (other than the occasional door banging shut)... but we can hear people in the hallway or stairway a lot more.
