All true.

There is always a trade off, some greater than others.......

For me:
pros:
- super-sensitivity to light, color and patterns - good for my photography passion
- and helps me in my work (bird-watching, animal tracking)
- creativeness
- I love to learn, and I'm learning really fast
- I'm emotionally self-sufficient - people needs a lot of "friends" to feel good (as far as I see), I can be happy in "party of myself"
- scientific/logical approach to world - no "faith", no superstitions, none of this crazy things

cons:
- MELTDOWNS! worst of the worst
- prone to depression
- extremely low self-esteem
- social phobia
- angst
- exhaustion after ANY social contact
- shutdowns
- inability to create/maintain relationship
- over-sensitivity to noise and scents

and hundreds of other problems :(

Pros:
- great powers of concentration (I can work on a project for several hours on end if I get into it)
- I march to the beat of my own drum. I don't think I could do this if I could perceive what people think about me
- logical creative mind, a different perspective from which to solve problems
- I have the focus necessary to be good at what I do (art and music)
- I think my sensory sensitivities also give me a good ear for music.
- I keep my cool in emotional/intense situations
- I can learn things quickly

Cons:
- it's really hard for me to develop anything beyond acquaintances
- I'm definitely not what people expect from a young woman. This causes some setbacks, romantically speaking
- All I can really understand is verbal communication and basic expressions in conversation. I'm missing A LOT.
- I can't give people the emotional support they need, just logical solutions
- I can't give adequate eye contact to even one person without being tired afterwards.
- I recently learned that my "default" body language tends to make me look nervous, shifty, and arrogant. Nothing could be further from the truth (except for being nervous).
- I get sensory overload easily and need lots of recharging time, both as an introvert and an aspie

What kind of employer do you have- who pays you to birdwatch, and to track animals?

Are you sure there are no advantages, at all, in your case ? Anything, you are able to do and do well with positive outcomes ? It does not really matter how significant society thinks these abilities are....

Nope - there's nothing good about my AS. All the things I can do are things what anyone can do. I know NTs who can play the piano too.

You are among a rare breed. The average person does not play an instrument much less the piano. And, no two people play an instrument exactly alike, so I'm willing to the BET your autism may add a little something, something THAT you may not be aware of.

Thanks for sharing.

*Note: It's not necessarily the fact that Non-Autistics can do what Autistics can do, it's to be expected. It's the uniqueness of the individual who makes the art their own that counts.

I could probably name about five or six qualities that would be seen as positive, given about half an hour thinking time.

Disadvantages however, hit me instantly and repeatedly and I could list about a dozen within 30 seconds.

So it's not so much what's on the list, just how I view my 'differences' in the first place.
