When I was about fourteen, I found a bunch of yellow-jacketed books in the school library. And they were full of stories that blew me away, and showed me that the universe was an amazing place, and that anything was possible for us humans, if we had the will and the knowledge.

Farewell.

Is it happening? Iraq War... morals degrading... violence increasing... psychotic murderers...failing education... Don't deterioriate into religious arguments, I'm trying to avoid that. The collapse of civilisation is around the corner, and has been around the corner for millenia. There are tablets...

I try not to feel superior to NTs. I really, really try. But this has broken me. It makes me wish that more people had AS, that someone with AS was in charge of UK schools. We tend to value fact over opinion. The Holocaust has been tastelessly exploited for propaganda purposes, certainly, but that ...

No. And I'm saying this as a white English-speaking middle-class heterosexual male. 99% of the time I hear "political correctness", it's from the mouth of someone offensive attempting to explain how it's just fine to be offensive because "at least I'm not being PC!". I have no doubt that some idiots...

Yeah, it's amazing at the misconceptions that people have about us. When I tell people that I'm Asperger's their first reaction is (if they know it's a kind of autism) "but you're not ret*d". My second favorite is that my interests aren't that weird or obsessive. Then they ask what I'm super smart ...

NOPE! I don't think ANY of the positives I would name have to do with coping mechanisms. As for coping? I avoid sports, crowds, working in areas where I am weak. BTW if your problems are caused by coping strategy failures, then why do you even try to cope? Because not coping kind of sucked. And the...

How many people here actually try to follow rules of debate, not necessarily these specifically, but some form of explicit rules? Debate Rules and Suggestions Advice on Debating with Others 1. Avoid the use of Never. 2. Avoid the use of Always. 3. Refrain from saying you are wrong. 4. You can say y...

A while ago, I got into a discussion about AS and high-functioning autism on another forum, where somebody else asked exactly what benefits AS was supposed to confer. I began to write a reply, and then stopped. The thing was, a lot of the positive traits I associate with AS are not a direct conseque...

http://www.thespacereview.com/article/1000/1 One part in particular leapt out at me: Americans in general have no idea what NASA’s “cost” is. In fact, most members of the public have no idea how much any government agency’s budget is. What we do know—and have recently documented—is that the public p...

Haha! I like number 9. Who would enter Parliament wearing a suit of armor anyway? (That sounds pretty hard core tho.) It actually a pretty dangerous place sometimes, especially when the relations between the king and Parliment became contentious. One of the triggers for the Civil War was when...

Probably what is most significant about evolution that the mechanisms posited are daily used by working biologists to actually modify species for special purposes. It is a useful tool. I have never heard a report of a creationist biologist modifying a species by praying to God. When that occurs, I ...

Something occured to me today on this topic. A frequent criticism of porn is that it promotes an unrealistic view of relationships, which is often fair, but it's far from alone. A lot of "harmless" romance books and films also have some pretty unsavoury subtexts when you think about them. "Stalking ...

Yeah, I have porn. I simply use it for pleasure and relieving sexual tension. It does not fulfill me, I think I would only find fulfillment in a relationship with a real woman. also I recognize this pornography as only "fantasy", it is only print on paper, data on disk, etc. and the workings of my ...

Just a simple quote from me. It works for me both on the personal level, and as an ideal on a larger scale. "How far can we anticipate the habitations and ways, the usages and adventures, the mighty employments, the ever increasing knowledge and power of the days to come? No more than a child with i...
